Alphonsus Liguori Penney

Alphonsus Liguori Penney (born September 17, 1924 in St. John's ; † December 12, 2017 ) was Archbishop of Saint John's, Newfoundland .

Life

Alphonsus Liguori Penney was ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of Saint John's on June 29, 1949 .

Pope Paul VI appointed him Bishop of Grand Falls on November 23, 1972 . The Apostolic Pro-Nuncio in Canada , Guido Del Mestri , donated him episcopal ordination on January 18, 1973 ; Co- consecrators were Patrick James Skinner CIM , Archbishop of Saint John's, Newfoundland, and William Edward Power , Bishop of Antigonish .

Pope John Paul II named him Archbishop of Saint John's, Newfoundland, on April 5, 1979 . The inauguration took place on May 31 of the same year.

On February 2, 1991, Pope John Paul II accepted his resignation for health reasons.
