Guido del Mestri
Guido Cardinal del Mestri (born January 13, 1911 in Banja Luka , Austria-Hungary ; † August 2, 1993 in Nuremberg , Germany ) was a Vatican diplomat and apostolic nuncio in Germany.
Life
Guido Graf del Mestri came from an Italian noble family. After graduating from the Jesuit college in Kalksburg near Vienna in 1930 , he took up philosophical and theological studies as a seminarist at the Almo Collegio Capranica in Rome , which he completed with doctorates in Catholic theology and canon law . On April 11, 1936, he received the sacrament of ordination and was incardinated in the diocese of Gorizia , where he worked as a parish priest and teacher at the boys' seminary until 1938.
After further studies, he became attaché of the Apostolic Nunciature in Yugoslavia in 1940 and secretary of the Apostolic Delegation in Lebanon in 1941 . He performed the same task in Romania until his expulsion for political reasons in 1950 . After a year in Rome , Pope Pius XII sent him . 1951 as an employee in the newly opened nunciature to Syria .
In 1953 he worked briefly in Indonesia before becoming an advisor to the Apostolic Nunciature in the Federal Republic of Germany . In 1959 Pope John XXIII appointed him . as Apostolic Delegate for the British Territories in East and West Africa .
In 1961, Guido del Mestri was appointed by Pope John XXIII. the Titular Archbishop of Tuscamia appointed and received on 31 December in 1961 by Laurean Cardinal Rugambwa the episcopal ordination . Co- consecrators were Cornelius Chitsulo, Bishop of Dedza , and Ireneus Wien Dud, Apostolic Vicar of Wau (today South Sudan) and Titular Bishop of Barcusus .
He attended the Second Vatican Council from 1962 to 1965 . In 1967 Pope Paul VI appointed him . as Apostolic Delegate in Mexico , in 1970 as Pronuntius in Canada and in 1975 as Apostolic Nuncio in the Federal Republic of Germany.
Del Mestri retired in 1984 as a nuncio and then worked at the Holy See in Rome, among other things in the secretariat of state and as a member of several congregations .
Pope John Paul II accepted him on June 28, 1991 as a cardinal deacon with the title deaconry Sant'Eustachio in the college of cardinals . In the last years of his life, Guido del Mestri lived in Nuremberg , where he worked as a hospital chaplain in the Theresienklinik. He died on August 2, 1993 in Nuremberg and was buried in his family's chapel near Medea .
