Josip Uhač
Josip Uhač (born June 20, 1924 in Brseč , Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes ; † January 18, 1998 in Rome ) was an Archbishop of the Roman Catholic Church and a diplomat of the Vatican .
Life
Josip Uhač received his theological and philosophical training in Fiume , Venice , Gorizia and Rome. He received his doctorate in both Catholic theology and canon law and completed special training in preparation for diplomatic service. On April 16, 1949, he received the sacrament of ordination . He then worked as a pastor in various parishes in Rome and continued his university studies. Between 1954 and 1970 he worked as a secretary and advisor to the Apostolic Nunciatures in Panama , Egypt , Germany and Spain .
Pope Paul VI appointed Josip Uhač in 1970 titular Archbishop of Tharros and appointed him Apostolic Pro-Nuncio in Pakistan . The Archbishop of Rijeka , Viktor Burić , donated him episcopal ordination on September 5, 1970; Co- consecrators were Dragutin Nežic , Bishop of Poreč i Pula , and Josip Pavlišic , Coadjutor of the Archbishop of Rijeka.
In 1976 Josip Uhač became Pro-Nuncio in Cameroon and Apostolic Delegate in Equatorial Guinea , 1981 Pro-Nuncio in Zaire . In 1984 Pope John Paul II appointed him Apostolic Nuncio in the Federal Republic of Germany , and in 1991 Secretary of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples . From 1991 to 1995 he headed the Pontifical Commission on Mission Issues. Josip Uhač was supposed to be accepted into the College of Cardinals in the consistory on February 21, 1998 , but died a few hours before the announcement of the planned appointment by Pope John Paul II on January 18, 1998 in Rome. He was buried in his birthplace Brseč (Istria).
