Thomas Joseph Cardinal Winning (born June 3, 1925 in Wishaw , North Lanarkshire , Scotland , † June 17, 2001 in Glasgow ) was Archbishop of Glasgow .

Life

Thomas Winning studied Catholic theology and philosophy in Aberdeen , Glasgow and Rome and received his doctorate in canon law . He was ordained a priest on December 18, 1948 . After further studies, he worked from 1953 as a pastor in Hamilton and Motherwell and as diocesan secretary of the Diocese of Motherwell . From 1961 he was spiritual of the Pontifical Scottish College ( The Pontifical Scots College ) in Rome, in 1965 he became a lawyer for the Rota Romana . From 1966 to 1970 he was pastor and official at the Diocesan Court of Motherwell. From 1970 to 1972 he was the first President of the Scottish National Court. He was a Grand Officer of the Order of Knights of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem .

Pope Paul VI appointed him Titular Bishop of Lugmad and Auxiliary Bishop in the Archdiocese of Glasgow in 1971 . He was ordained episcopal on November 30, 1971 in St. Andrew's Cathedral in Glasgow by the Archbishop of Glasgow James Donald Scanlan , co-consecrators were Stephen McGill , Bishop of Paisley , and Francis Alexander Spalding Warden Thomson , Bishop of Motherwell.

From 1971 to 1974 Thomas Winning headed the administration of the Archdiocese of Glasgow as vicar general and also worked as a pastor in Clydebank . On April 23, 1974, he was appointed Archbishop of Glasgow. He served as President of the Scottish Bishops' Conference from 1985 to 2001 . In 1992 Thomas Joseph Winning received an honorary doctorate from Strathclyde University . Pope John Paul II accepted him on November 26, 1994 as a cardinal priest with the titular church of Sant'Andrea delle Fratte in the college of cardinals . In 1996 he was elected an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh .

Thomas Joseph Cardinal Winning died on June 17, 2001 in Glasgow and was buried in the crypt of the cathedral there.
