The diocese of Poreč-Pula ( Croat. Porečko i Pulska biskupija , lat. Dioecesis Parentina et Polensis ) is a Roman Catholic diocese in Croatia . It has been subordinate to the Archdiocese of Rijeka since 2000 . The territory of the Diocese of Poreč-Pula includes all of Istria , apart from the small Slovenian part near Koper. The diocese was created in 1828 by merging the dioceses of Poreč and Pula. The main church of the diocese is the Euphrasian Basilica of Poreč .
history
The first bishop of Poreč known by name was St. Maurus , who suffered martyrdom at the end of the 3rd century . It is believed that Pula was a bishopric as early as the 4th century.
Until they were merged, Poreč and Pula were subordinate to different metropolises: Aquileia , Gorizia , Udine and Venice . The once independent dioceses of Pićan and Novigrad were incorporated into today's diocese . When the dioceses were reorganized in the Austrian Empire in 1828, the northern and central parts of Istria became the diocese of Trieste and Capodistria .
After the Second World War , an independent apostolic administration was founded in Pazin in 1947 . This administered those areas of the diocese of Trieste and Capodistria, which had now become Yugoslav. In 1977 the Holy See decided under Pope Paul VI. that these areas are to be incorporated into the rebuilt diocese of Koper .
In parts of the diocese, the Old Slavonic rite was cultivated into the 20th century .
