Today's diocese of Syrmia ( Serb. Sremska biskupija , Croat. Srijemska biskupija , lat. Dioecesis Sirmiensis ) is a diocese of the Roman Catholic Church in Serbia . It originally extended over the historical region of Syrmia , which includes both parts of Croatia and Serbia (the Croatian Vukovar-Srijem County and part of Vojvodina , plus the villages of Zemun and Novi Beograd ). Bishop of the diocese is Đuro Gašparović .
history
The diocese of Syrmia was established in the 4th century AD . After severe devastation by the Avars and Huns and after the death of Bishop Method von Saloniki in 885, it became completely extinct. It was re-established in 1231. On the initiative of Pope Clement XIV , the diocese was united with the historical diocese of Bosnia ( Diocese of Vrhbosna ) in 1773 . The bishop's see (the cathedra ) was moved to Đakovo and it existed as the diocese of Bosna (Djakovo) et Srijem until 1963. From 1963 to 2008 the diocese was called Bosna (Djakovo) i Srijem . Pope Benedict XVI elevated Bosna (Djakovo) to an archbishopric with the name Archdiocese of Đakovo-Osijek and the center of a fourth church province on Croatian territory.
On June 18, 2008 the diocese of Syrmia was founded by Pope Benedict XVI. renewed and raised to the diocese. According to a papal decree, the diocese of Syrmia falls under the Croatian metropolis of Đakovo-Osijek, although it is now limited to Serbian territory. Accordingly, the Bishop of Syrmia is not a member of the Croatian Bishops 'Conference , but of the international Bishops' Conference of Saints Cyril and Method , based in Belgrade . The diocese has 29 parishes in which the Roman Catholic Christians pastoral by 19 pastors are cared for.
