The diocese of Sisak ( Latin Dioecesis Sisciensis , Croatian Sisačka biskupija ) is a Roman Catholic diocese in Croatia with its seat in Sisak . The current diocesan bishop is Vlado Košić .

history

Early Christian diocese

In the area of the Roman province of Pannonia inferior , bishops of Siscia have been handed down since the 4th century . The first was Quirinus of Siscia ( Croat . Sveti Kvirin Sisački ), who is venerated as a saint and is the patron saint of the diocese.

After the fall of Sirmium in 441, the diocese of Siscia joined the metropolitan area of Salona .

Between 530 and 579 own bishops are passed down again.

From the end of the 6th century the diocese is no longer mentioned. At the first synod of Split in 925 an attempt was made to found a new one. This project failed.

In the 11th century the area became part of the newly founded diocese of Zagreb .

Bishops

  • Quirinus of Siscia (309)
  • Marcus (343)
  • Costantius I (381)
  • John (530)
  • Costantius II (532)
  • Vindemius (579, 590)

Titular bishopric

From May 1999 Sisak was titular bishopric . The only titular bishop was Nikola Eterović (* 1951 in Pučišća; ≈ 1977 priest of the diocese of Hvar ), then curia bishop and now nuncio in Germany.

Modern diocese

The Catholic parishes belonged to the diocese or archdiocese of Zagreb until 2009. In a very rare case in church history, the titular bishopric was converted into a diocesan bishopric: The Sisak diocese was founded on December 5, 2009 by Pope Benedict XVI. established with the Apostolic Constitution Antiquam fidem . The bishopric is located in the Croatian town of the same name, Sisak. On the day of the establishment of the diocese, the auxiliary bishop of Zagreb, Vlado Košić, was appointed the first bishop of the diocese.

The diocese is subordinate to the Archdiocese of Zagreb and is one of 4 dioceses there.

The patron saint of the diocese is the martyr Quirinus of Siscia ( Croat . Sveti Kvirin Sisački ), who was buried in Rome.
