The Roman Catholic Diocese of Varaždin ( lat. : Dioecesis Varasdinensis , kroat. : Varaždinska Biskupija ) is in Croatia located diocese of the Roman Catholic Church , based in Varazdin . As a suffragan, it is subordinate to the Archdiocese of Zagreb .
history
The city became an important center of the Christian faith in its early city history . In the 13th century the Order of St. John came to Varaždin. The Order built the Church of St. John the Baptist and their monastery. In the middle of the 13th century the Franciscans took over the monastery and the church. In addition, the Church of St. Nicholas and the Church of St. Vitus built in the city. After a fire in 1582, the Baroque era gradually set in in the city. The Jesuits founded their grammar school in 1636. The building was completely damaged by fire in 1648. Afterwards the Jesuit order rebuilt the grammar school and at the same time united it architecturally with the church of the Holy Mother of God . After the fire in 1776, Rococo and Classicist buildings were built in the town of Varaždin and the suburbs of Varaždin . Despite the subsequent building changes in the 19th and 20th centuries, the Baroque style still characterizes the cityscape.
In the 18th century the city became the seat of Croatian political greats of the "Banska Hrvatska", such as the Drašković , the Keglević , the Patačić, the Sermaga and others. The years from 1767 to 1776 are considered to be the most glamorous in Varaždin. In 1776 this progress was suddenly stopped by a fire. The cultural and political center moved to Zagreb .
The diocese of Varaždin was established on July 5, 1997 by Pope John Paul II with the Apostolic Constitution Clarorum sanctorum . The northern border of the diocese forms the natural course of the Drava, which corresponds to the border between Croatia and Hungary and Slovenia .
