history
The first written document about the town of Šibenik comes from the year 1066. It not only tells about the town of Šibenik, but also about the Croatian King Petar Krešimir IV and the Monastery of Our Lady in Zadar . Pope Boniface VIII had the diocese of Šibenik built in 1298. Martin Rabljan became the first bishop of the diocese .
The following dioceses were attached to the Diocese of Šibenik in 1828: the Diocese of Trogir , the Diocese of Knin and the Diocese of Skradin .
The current Šibenik Cathedral was built for exactly 105 years (1431–1536). The church building was consecrated in 1555 .
Pope Leo XIII. elevated the Šibenik Cathedral to a basilica in 1895 . It is the largest architectural monument from the Renaissance period in Croatia.
On June 21, 1970 Nikola Tavelić , a Franciscan priest and a son of the city of Šibenik, was by Pope Paul VI. canonized. Another important Franciscan and son of the city was Ante Antić . His beatification and canonization is currently pending in the Holy See .
