List of fatal accidents in competitive skiing
In skiing , there are numerous deadly annually accidents . This list only shows accidents in the field of competitive sports in chronological order.
1930s
- 1938: Giacinto Sertorelli crashes into a tree on the Kandahar descent from Garmisch-Partenkirchen and succumbs to his injuries the next day.
1950s
- 1953: The Italian Ilio Colli crashes into a tree on February 21 on the descent from Madesimo and dies.
- 1959: John Semmelink of Canada falls on February 7, 1959 at the Kandahar downhill in Garmisch-Partenkirchen in the FIS swath into a dry stream bed and die of a fracture of the skull .
- 1959: On March 7th, the Austrian Toni Mark rode into a group of spectators during the downhill run around the Golden Shield from Wallberg in Rottach-Egern . Mark succumbs to his serious injuries in hospital three days later, injuring three spectators.
1960s
- 1964: Ross Milne from Australia had a fatal accident while training during the Olympic Games on Patscherkofel .
- 1965: Walter Mussner from Italy is the first to die in speed skiing . He had a fatal accident in a race in Cervinia .
- 1969: Silvia Suter from Switzerland crashes into a barrier at the finish line during a race in Sportinia , Sauze d'Oulx .
1970s
- 1970: In a fall on the World Cup downhill in Megève , Frenchman Michel Bozon breaks his neck and dies.
- 1972: David Noelle from the USA collides with a tree during the descent to the University Championships in Winter Park .
- 1972: Arthur Gobber from Austria dies on the descent of the Austrian Junior Championships in Schladming .
- 1973: Sverre Rasmusbakke from Norway had an accident in his home country in a giant slalom.
- 1974: The Swiss Jean-Marc Béguelin dies in a high-speed race in Cervinia.
- 1975: Michel Dujon from France sustains fatal injuries in training in Val-d'Isère when colliding with a ski lift mast.
- 1975: 16-year-old Markku Vuopala from Finland dies in a collision with a tree after crossing the finish line in the downhill run of the European Junior Championships in Zell am Ziller .
- 1979: Leonardo David from Italy had an accident in Lake Placid during the pre-Olympic descent. He dies of head injuries after six years in a coma in 1985.
- 1979: The 16-year-old Finn Sara Mustonen dies after falling into a crevasse while training on the Hintertux Glacier .
1980s
- 1982: The 16-year-old Ebinger Uwe Piske collides with a tree while driving in for the downhill run of the German championships without a crash helmet 200 meters away from the race track in Bolsterlang .
- 1984: Sepp Walcher from Austria , downhill world champion from 1978 , dies of skull injuries after falling during a downhill run in Rohrmoos .
1990s
- 1991: Gernot Reinstadler from Austria dies of internal injuries after falling on the finish slope of the qualifying downhill in the World Cup in Wengen .
- 1992: Swiss Nicolas Bochatay dies when he collides with a snowcat while warming up for speed skiing at the 1992 Winter Olympics.
- 1992: Peter Wirnsberger II from Austria crashes into a wooden fence while skiing after the Salzburg state championships and dies a little later.
- 1994: Ulrike Maier falls on the Kandahar run in Garmisch and collides with a timing device. She suffered a fatal neck break.
- 1996: Kirsteen McGibbon from Great Britain dies of head and internal injuries after falling on a descent in Altenmarkt-Zauchensee .
2000s
- 2001: The French Super-G world champion Régine Cavagnoud collides with the German junior coach Markus Anwander on the descent on the Pitztal Glacier and dies two days later in an Innsbruck hospital. Anwander survives seriously injured.
- 2002: The Swiss Werner Elmer dies at the age of 20 in a collision with a marshal in Verbier .
- 2004: The 17-year-old American Shelley Glover suffers serious head injuries in a training fall and dies three days later.
- 2008: The Swiss Ursin Schmed dies at the age of 18 in an accident in the Kaunertal .
2010s
- 2012: The 18-year-old Turkish ski racer Asli Nemutlu suffered a broken neck in the ski resort of the Erzurum province in a fall during training for the Turkish youth championships after a ski came off.
- 2012: The Canadian Freestyle -Skierin and former halfpipe world champion Sarah Burke died nine days after a training accident in the superpipe of Park City .
- 2012: Canadian freestyle skier Nick Zoricic fell while jumping at the finish line of the Skicross World Cup in Grindelwald and died shortly afterwards from severe head trauma.
- 2017: The 35-year-old French ski racer David Poisson broke through the safety nets in Nakiska, Canada after falling during training in preparation for the Alpine World Cup races in Lake Louise and crashed into a tree.
- 2017: 17-year-old Max Burkhart died after falling down on a descent in Lake Louise (Canada).
