General

The Wallberg made history as the starting point for large cross-country flights for paragliders and hang-gliders. The Wallberg toboggan run is Germany's longest winter toboggan run. The Wallberg race on Wallbergstrasse, one of the most famous automobile mountain races in the 1960s, has not been held for a long time for ecological reasons.

The ascent from the Wallbergbahn valley station near Rottach-Egern leads over a saddle to the left past the Setzberg ( 1706  m ) to the Wallbergbahn mountain station . The Wallberg panorama restaurant there is 1623  m above sea level. After another 30 minutes you reach the summit.

The Wallberg transmitter is located on the mountain .

Wallberg Panorama Road

Apart from taking the Wallbergbahn or on foot or by bike, you can cover part of the way to the summit via a toll road ( Wallberg-Panoramastraße ) by motor vehicle. At the beginning of the 1930s there were considerations to build a cable car or a road on the Wallberg. The Rottacher Verkehrsverein suggested to the Bavarian State Ministry of the Interior that Wallbergstrasse be integrated into the already planned cross- alpine road . But the ministry refused in 1934. After the failed coup by the National Socialists in Austria in 1934, numerous SA men fled to Bavaria. Around 600 of these "legionaries" were used to build Wallbergstrasse. The Rottacher Tourist Association as the client paid ordinary workers 40 pfennigs an hour. The NSDAP in turn sponsored the association. From 1935 onwards, work was done at full speed. In 1937 the route to the Moosalm, today's Gasthaus Wallbergmoos , was opened to traffic. Further expansion was not carried out due to the further political developments and the outbreak of war in 1939. In winter the road is closed to motor vehicle traffic and included in the Wallberg toboggan run.
