As Plattenkalk or dolomite informally fine-grained (are micritic ) carbonate sedimentary rocks denotes the platy, d. H. are layered in the centimeter range. It is not a petrographic term.

The designation occurs in natural stone names such as Nusplinger Plattenkalk ( Kimmeridgium , Swabian Alb ), Wattendorfer Plattenkalk (Kimmeridgium, northern Franconian Alb ) or Solnhofen Plattenkalk ( Tithonium , southern Franconian Alb).

In the alpine limestone of the Northern Limestone Alps, the Noric transition facies of the main dolomite (tidal facies, carnian) in the banked Dachstein limestone (lagoon facies, norium-rhaetium) are also called plate limestone .
