history
Until the church is planted
Wattendorf is an old settlement area, which has existed since the time of the linear ceramic band , in the late 6th or early 5th millennium BC. BC, was settled.
The first written mention goes back to the year 1180; at that time the place was owned by the Counts of Andechs . From 1260 to 1274 Wattendorf was owned by the Count of Truhendingen . In 1274 he donated Gut Wattendorf to the Cistercian monastery Langheim , to which it belonged until the secularization in 1803. The position of the monastery in relation to the bishopric of Bamberg became weaker and weaker over time, so that at the end of the Old Kingdom one can almost speak of a mediat of the bishopric. Since the Reichsdeputationshauptschluss of 1803, the place like large parts of Franconia belong to Bavaria (see also history of Franconia ). In the course of the administrative reforms in the Kingdom of Bavaria , today's municipality was created with the municipal edict of 1818 .

coat of arms
The coat of arms shows in blue a silver eagle looking to the left; behind a golden cup from which a golden abbot's staff grows.
The eagle and the color blue are reminiscent of the Dukes of Andechs-Meranien , who exercised power over Wattendorf until 1248. The chalice and the abbot's staff remind of the donation of the place to the Cistercian monastery Langheim by the counts of Truhendingen in the year 1260.

In addition, in 1999 there were 79 farms with an agricultural area of 1220 hectares, of which 1078 hectares were arable land and 140 hectares were permanent green space.
Wattendorfer Plattenkalk
In a quarry near Wattendorf, high-purity limestone (Wattendorfer Kalk) and dolomite (dolomitized reef limestone ) from the late Jurassic period ( Kimmeridgian , approx. 155 million years old) are mined. In 2002, Thomas Bechmann, the taxidermist at the Natural History Museum in Bamberg , came across fossils of fish and crabs in one of the intervals made of thin-plate, laminated limestone (" Plattenkalk "), which are included in the sequence between the Wattendorfer Kalk and the reef dolomite . The Bamberg Natural History Museum has been conducting excavation campaigns since 2004. For the excavation, part of the fossil-bearing layer package is freed from the overlying, fossil-poor layers by an excavator and then completely dismantled over the course of several weeks. For safety reasons, it is strictly forbidden to enter the quarry by unauthorized persons.
The discovery of the fossil deposit in the Wattendorfer Platte Limestone, at the northern end of the superficial distribution area of the White Jurassic Limestone , led in the following years to spectacular discoveries of some previously unknown species . In 2012, for example, a pterosaur with long legs and trap teeth was uncovered.
The Wattendorfer Plattenkalke are interpreted as lagoon deposits. They were created in a similar way to the Solnhofen limestone , only a few million years earlier. According to previous knowledge, the deposit in Wattendorf has an even greater fossil density than the world-famous fossil deposit in Solnhofen. Prepared finds are presented in the Bamberg Natural History Museum.
