Not only because of its favorable location on the A 73 and the short distance to Bamberg (12 km), Forchheim (13 km), Erlangen (approx. 30 km), Fürth (approx. 40 km) and Nuremberg (approx. 50 km) Hirschaid has grown strongly since the 1960s.

Neighboring communities

Neighboring communities are (starting in the north, clockwise): Pettstadt , Strullendorf , Buttenheim , Altendorf , Hallerndorf ( Forchheim district ), Höchstadt an der Aisch ( Erlangen-Höchstadt district , Middle Franconia ) and Frensdorf .

Community structure

There are eleven districts (population in brackets, as of March 13, 2019):

history

town hall

The name of the place is derived from the name of the noble family von Hirzheide . The deer of the family coat of arms is included in the current coat of arms of Hirschaid.

Hirschaid is not far from the former Via Imperii , an old road that has linked the north in the Lüneburg area with the south to Upper Austria since ancient times . The name Hirschaid refers to the earlier landscape and animal world.

Archaeological finds on the terraces of the Regnitz valley bear witness to an early settlement, beginning at the latest in the Neolithic Age . Witnesses from the later Latène period ( Celts ) are above all the finds from the ground and remains of walls on the nearby Friesener Warte .

In 1079, Hirschaid became historically tangible for the first time through a document issued by King Heinrich IV . The 900th anniversary celebrations took place in 1979. From 1300 it was the seat of the noble lords, the ministerials and bailiffs of Hirzheide . Your Frankish line died out in 1590, a Swedish - Livonian line still exists. Your coat of arms at that time, a stag in silver and gold rising from a blue three-mountain, was the model for today's municipal coat of arms.

Even though Hirschaid was largely spared in the Peasants' War , the town on the main thoroughfare was hit particularly hard in the Swedish War . A chronicler reports from this time: “After Candlemas 1633 the Swedes also came here and lived in the Swedish way. They plundered and robbed what they could achieve, nothing was sacred to them. Windows and doors of the church were smashed, the inside demolished, the bells pulled down and smashed ... "

The place suffered further looting in the Seven Years' War (1756–1763) and especially in the Napoleonic Wars , when a violent cavalry and artillery battle broke out between the Imperial Army and the French troops on August 6, 1793 .

With the secularization , Hirschaid, which was assigned to the Eggolsheim center during the Hochstiftzeit , came to Bavaria with its 105 "independent houses".

The construction of the Ludwig-Danube-Main Canal in 1834 and the opening of the Ludwig-Süd-Nord-Bahn in 1844 provided Hirschaid with the first industrial incentives. The Ludwig Canal led west past the historic town center, the railway line east, and a loading point was built south of the old town for cargo handling . Thanks to its rail connection, this offered trimodal cargo handling ship / rail / road as early as 1845 .

The basketry introduced around this time offered additional work and income. By 1900 the population had grown to 1,120 and the number of houses to 173.

During the November pogrom in 1938 , the synagogue of the Jewish community on Nürnberger Strasse was destroyed by SA men . At its former location, a memorial stone commemorates the church and the persecuted and murdered Jewish residents of Hirschaid.

The Ludwig Canal and the grounds were abandoned near Hirschaid in 1950 and built over with the Main-Danube Canal in the early 1960s . Since then, the closest loading facilities have been at the ports of Eggolsheim or Bamberg .

Due to its favorable traffic situation, due to the train station on the Nuremberg-Bamberg railway line and the immediate vicinity of the federal motorway 73 , but also due to the regional reform with the incorporation of Erlach, Friesen and Seigendorf on January 1, 1972 and Röbersdorf, Rothensand and Sassanfahrt on January 1, 1972 In May 1978 the Hirschaid market with its parts of the municipality grew to almost 12,000 inhabitants and developed into a small center of traffic and economy.
