geography

Geographical location

Due to its location on a transport route along the Main from east to west and from Thuringia to Bavaria, Zapfendorf was always a transit station in the Main Valley . On the Main, raftsmen transported wood from the Franconian Forest to the Rhine and as far as Rotterdam.

Neighboring communities

Neighboring communities are (starting from the north in a clockwise direction): Ebensfeld ( Lichtenfels district ), Scheßlitz , Breitengüßbach and Rattelsdorf .

Community structure and population development

The community is divided into eleven districts. The population fluctuates around 5,000 in the 21st century.

history

Until the church is planted

The place was already settled in early history, as evidence from the Bronze Age shows . Zapfendorf was first mentioned in a document in 904. The name goes back to Zapfo ( village of Zapf ) and therefore probably refers to a tapping host. The original masters were the Meranians, followed by the Truhendinger . They sold the place in 1390 to the bishopric of Bamberg , which from 1500 was in the Franconian Empire . Since the Reichsdeputationshauptschluss of 1803, the place, like large parts of Franconia, has belonged to Bavaria (see also History of Franconia ).

Second World War

At the end of the Second World War , on April 1, 1945, around 7:50 a.m., an air raid took place on the Zapfendorf train station. At that time, a freight train that had also loaded explosive material had stopped there. What it was about is not known. The train was hit in the attack, caught fire and exploded in two consecutive detonations . They left two closely spaced explosion craters , which took up an area of 68 m × 18 m and were up to 4.50 m deep. 23 people died. Zapfendorf was largely destroyed by the flying parts, some of which were burning.

On the occasion of the expansion of the Bamberg – Lichtenfels railway line in connection with the connection of the Nuremberg – Erfurt high-speed line in the direction of Munich , the archaeological remains of the 2015/2016 disaster were documented. 30 tons of steel scrap were recovered, the remains of at least seven destroyed freight wagons ( wheel sets , buffers and couplings ) and their cargo, including a wide variety of weapons and ammunition . A regular excavation was not carried out because of the danger posed by unexploded explosives .

After the Second World War

In 1955 Zapfendorf was given the name Markt .

Until June 30, 1972, Zapfendorf belonged to the disbanded district of Staffelstein before it came to the district of Bamberg . Today it is classified as a small center in the Upper Franconia West region.

Incorporations

On July 1, 1972, the previously independent communities of Kirchschletten , Lauf, Oberleiterbach, Oberoberndorf and Sassendorf were incorporated. On January 1, 1978 Unterleiterbach was added.

religion

According to the census on May 9, 2011, 78.6% of the population are Roman Catholic and 12.0% Evangelical Lutheran. 9.4% have another religion or are non-denominational.
