history

Until the church is planted

The history of settlement in Kemmern is very old and goes back a long way to the first millennium BC. For example, the origins of the Helenenkapelle on the Semberg point to a place of worship as early as the time of the Celts . In the early Middle Ages , the border between the Germanic and the Slavic settlement area ran in the area of today's Kemmern . By Germanic Frankish settlement activity Germanic testify deserted villages Disability Home and ski ring Slavic origin is likely the former Bürg have been as important refuge and sanctuary of Main Contact.

Kemmern was first mentioned in writing in a document dated October 26, 1017 as Camerin in what was then Radenzgau . In this document, Emperor Heinrich II confirms an exchange agreement in which, in addition to Erlangen and Forchheim , four fishermen in Kemmern were transferred from Bishop Heinrich von Würzburg to Bishop Eberhard von Bamberg .

In the centuries that followed, up to the secularization of 1803, Kemmern essentially remained an Obleidorf (from Mittellat. Oblaia , old name for donations to religious foundations, monasteries) of the Bamberg cathedral chapter , but had limited autonomy fairly early on. In this way, Kemmern was able to regulate his local affairs in a statute, the village order, which did not require any “village-lordly” sanction. For his protection, Kemmern had a water-filled moat and three gatehouses. Kemmern is shown on a map from the 16th century, but the neighboring, partially destroyed Hallstadt is not. In the Peasants' War of 1525, the Kemmern took an active part on the part of the rebels. In the winter of 1631/1632 Kemmern was visited by Swedish troops. The suffering the Thirty Years' War brought Kemmern can be gauged from the fact that as early as 1638 only 26 of the 68 cathedral chapter stoves were still inhabited.

In the Seven Years' War from 1756 to 1763 Kemmern was plagued several times by billeting of various imperial troops as well as by Prussian incursions and billeting, since the Bamberg prince-bishop was an ally of Austria .

With the Reichsdeputationshauptschluss of 1803, the place came to Bavaria. In the course of the administrative reforms in Bavaria , today's municipality was created with the municipal edict of 1818 .

20th and 21st centuries

Kemmern has been an independent parish since 1710 . The Catholic parish church of St. Peter and Paul was expanded between 1978 and 1980.

Since Kemmern was repeatedly threatened by floods due to its location on the Main, as the natural events in February 1909 and December 1967 in particular showed, it received extensive flood exposure in the years 1978 to 1980. The town center has been redeveloped since 1995 as part of urban development funding with state aid and financial grants from the European Union (EU). The redesigned church square was completed in 2010 as its centerpiece.

The preservation of a historical cultural landscape with the high medieval path system and the small parceled pointed corridors enabled the survival of rare species worthy of protection, such as the garlic toads and the poppy bees . The poppy bee population (Osmia papaveris) near Kemmern is the world's largest known occurrence.
