Kirchschletten is a small town with around 120 inhabitants on the northern edge of the Bamberg district . It belongs to the Zapfendorf market and is located a little off the road connecting Zapfendorf to Scheßlitz . The area was already settled in pre-Christian times, as numerous finds prove. The Franconian Marienweg runs through the village .

history

Kirchschletten was first mentioned in a document in 1125. However, the place existed as early as the 8th century and had a certain regional importance towards the end of the 8th century. It is very likely that Kirchschletten was one of the 14 Slavic churches that were built as part of the Slavic mission of Emperor Charlemagne. One of the reasons for this assumption is the St. John patronage and the foundation of the place by the Slavs . The name Kirchschletten, called Sleten in 1124 and Sletin in 1125, is probably of Slavic origin. Schletten (Czech Sletina) means salty water, sour water, swamp, moorland. The valley floor of the Aspach Valley was very swampy in the past and is still rich in springs today.

The Kirchschletten estate was first mentioned in a document in 1143. Until secularization it belonged to the prince-bishops of Bamberg. On May 13, 1953, the Benedictine Sisters acquired the property from the Eucharistic King and established the Maria Frieden priory . It was settled with sisters from the founding abbey Immaculate Heart of Mary, Luzon island region , Philippines .

On July 1, 1972, the previously independent community was incorporated into the Zapfendorf market.

On 5 May 1973, the priory was separated from the mother abbey in the Philippines and the Holy See for Abbey Maria Peace levied. The abbey belongs to the Federation of Bavarian Benedictine Sisters and in 2007 had around 20 sisters who deliberately "live together with different cultures and languages".
