One of the main themes of Wientzek's painting is the pointed depiction of the human-organized cultural landscape and the rural-urban mixed zones between idyll and economic use, with subtle allusions to the painterly traditions of bygone eras, v. a. the 19th century.
In addition to his work as a painter and draftsman, he devotes himself to media projects, performances, illustrations and music. Since 2000 he has been developing projects together with the Vienna-Graz-Bamberg artists' collective monochrom , and in 2003 he received an artist-in-residence grant at the MuseumsQuartier in Vienna. In collaboration with the artist collective monochrom, he played a key role in the multimedia installation of the Austrian pavilion at the 2002 São Paulo Biennale .
In June 2007 his painting “Land in Sicht” was bought by the museums of the city of Bamberg. In 2008 Wientzek received the Volker Hinniger Prize for Contemporary Art. In April 2010, the government of Upper Franconia acquired the painting "Europe".
“Anyone who would like to classify Wientzek's art in the category“ Photo Realism ”is not completely wrong at first glance, but on closer inspection it is completely wrong. In contrast to photos, his large-format landscapes, naturally revealing nudes and modernly arranged still lifes show not just a small section of reality, Richard Wientzek's paintings are reality in all of their contradicting facets. "
From 2010, Wientzek shifted his creative focus from painting to drawing. Recalling his former work as a draftsman at the Archaeological State Collection in Munich, he depicts objects and bizarre found objects on a 1: 1 scale with drawing ink and colored pencils on paper Art and cultural history as well as book or song titles.
"" This is how symbols are created - defective symbols of a diverse, sad and funny world, the substance of which we ultimately know is made up of molecules, of much empty space and little that can be understood in between. Wientzek describes this state of the world without even rising above the smallest. It is an astonished smile again and again, a delighted acknowledgment that applies to the ephemeral creations of this world - and this quality of Wientzek's works is deeply poetic. ""
In 2018, Wientzek's graphic work was honored in a solo exhibition in the National Gallery in Prague.
