Schlegel, initially active at ASV Sassanfahrt, joined the youth team of 1. FC Nürnberg in 1976 and completed his professional training at Siemens . It is reported that at that time DFB coach Dietrich Weise described the young Upper Franconian as the greatest discovery of this year . In the Nuremberg team he was used in the first team from the 1979/80 season, initially in the second division and, after promotion, also in the first division. In 1983 he joined 1. FC Saarbrücken and was later active in Berlin for Hertha BSC and SpVgg Fürth .

Schlegel, who also belonged to the Bayern team and the youth team of the DFB , played a total of 59 Bundesliga games (2 goals) and 257 second division games (43 goals). His greatest successes were promotions with 1. FC Nürnberg and 1. FC Saarbrücken from the 2. Bundesliga to the Bundesliga .

After his playing career, he ran his parents' gas station until October 2003 and coached various teams. He looked after the team of the Bayern league club FC Bayern Hof , the amateur team of SpVgg Greuther Fürth and SV Memmelsdorf / Ofr. , SpVgg Bayreuth , SpVgg Weiden and again SV Memmelsdorf. In the 2012/13 season he was again the coach of the Bayern Hof team, which is now playing in the Regionalliga Bayern, and which he had meanwhile led to a non-relegation zone after a strong second half. After a 3-0 defeat of his team on the last day of the match against VfL Frohnlach , who had already been relegated , Schlegel was relieved of his duties as Hof coach. On December 5, 2014 Schlegel took over as the successor to Roberto Pätzold as coach of the regional league team FC Eintracht Bamberg .
