history

From the foundation to the Second World War

The club was founded on June 1, 1910 as the Hof Ballspielclub and renamed FC Britannia Hof a year later . The first game in the club's history against Normannia Plauen was lost 1:15. In 1913, the clubs FC Roland Hof and FC Phönix Hof joined Britannia, which took on the name FC Bayern Hof on August 22, 1924. Three years later, he was promoted to the then first-class district league Northern Bavaria . The league was managed by a 3-0 playoff win against FSV Nürnberg . During the 1929/30 season, FC Bayern caused a sensation with two victories over 1. FC Nürnberg . A year later, the team was about to qualify for the southern German championship. The playoff against VfR Fürth tied on points ended goalless after extra time . The Fürth team won the replay 2-1. In 1932 the Hofers got down.

A year later, the Gauligen were introduced as the top division. FC Bayern qualified for the promotion round in 1934, but failed there at SpVgg Weiden and BC Augsburg . In the years 1936 and 1941, the team missed the renewed qualification for the promotion round after defeats in the play-off against VfB Coburg . It was only when the Gauligen were split up further and further due to the war that FC Bayern Hof reached the Gauliga in 1944. However, no more games were played there.

1945 to 1963: post-war period

In 1946, FC Bayern was promoted to the Northern Bavarian League and promptly became champions. In the finals of the Bayern Championship, the team had to admit defeat to FC Wacker Munich . In 1950, the team qualified as runner-up in the now all-Bavarian regional league for the promotion round to the Oberliga Süd, where they failed at VfL Neckarau . Nevertheless, the club was included in the II. Division South , where the team advanced to the top group in the mid-1950s. 1959 finally succeeded in promotion to the Oberliga Süd.

Immediately in the promotion season of 1959/60, the Hofers reached the highest average attendance in the club's history with 11,567. The Munich evening newspaper described Hof as the "most football-loving city in the Federal Republic". The reigning German champions Eintracht Frankfurt were beaten 1-0 at home, while Eintracht won the second leg 11-0. In the following years, FC Bayern established itself in the major league and reached its sporting zenith in the 1961/62 season with sixth place. The highlight of the season was a 5-0 win at today's record champions FC Bayern Munich . In 1963 the club missed the newly created Bundesliga and was included in the Regionalliga Süd .

1963 to 1974: Regional league years

After three years in the middle of the regional league, the Hofers were runner -up in the regional football league in 1966/67 due to the poorer goal quotient against Kickers Offenbach . Goal scorer Wolfgang Breuer , who was the top scorer with 28 goals, played a major role in this success . Another star of the regional league era was midfielder Ludwig Schuster , who was with the club from 1971 to 1975 and was later signed by Munich Bayern. In the promotion round to the Bundesliga, Hofer came fourth. A year later , FC Bayern became regional league champions, but failed again as the bottom of the group in the promotion round. At the home game against Rot-Weiss Essen , a attendance record of 19,100 that is still valid today was set. In the following two seasons, the Hofer missed the promotion round.

In 1969, FC Bayern Hof was the first German sports team to visit Israel and played two friendly matches. Bayern Hof won the first game in Nahariya against a regional team from North Israel 2-0. In the second game against the then record champion Hapoel Petach Tikwa , who was also reinforced with other national players, the Hofers lost 0: 3.

In 1972 the Hofer were again runner-up, but failed as in the two previous participations in the promotion round. In the 1972/73 season, the team took part in the League Cup, where they could win twice in the preliminary round against Bayern Munich. In the quarterfinals, the end came against FC Schalke 04 . In 1974 the club was included in the newly created 2nd Bundesliga.

A year later, the team reached their most successful season in the DFB Cup , where Hofer reached the round of 16 via VfR Oli Bürstadt , 1. FC Mülheim and SG Wattenscheid 09 . There the Hamburger SV caused the end with a 2-0 win in Hof. 1978, despite a 4-0 win on the last day of the game against 1. FC Nürnberg, the Hofers were relegated from the 2nd Bundesliga, as competitor KSV Baunatal beat Kickers Offenbach at the same time.

Two years later, FC Bayern was relegated to the state league. The resurgence in 1983 was followed by another descent one year later. It was not until 1988 that he was promoted to the Bavarian League, which was followed two years later by relegated to the regional league. After two third places, the Hofers were runner-up in the Landesliga Nord in 1993, but failed in the Bayern league delegation 2: 4 at TSV Eching . A year later, FC Bayern returned to the Bavarian League as state league champions.

1994 to 2005: the last few years

In contrast to the previous years, the Hofer were able to establish themselves in the fourth-class Bayernliga and reached fourth place in the 1995/96 season . Three years later, the class could only be held after a show of strength. First, FC Bayern lost the playoff for participation in the Bayern League delegation against TSV Schwaben Augsburg in the neutral Schwabach with 0: 3. As a result, the Hofer had to take part in the relegation, where the relegation was secured after a 2-0 against the DJK Waldberg in neutral Lichtenfels . In the following seasons ( 1999/2000 ) and 2001/02 , Bayern was fourth.

As the penultimate of the 2003/04 season , the Hofer rose again from the state league, where they were runner-up behind the Würzburger FV . In the Bayern league delegation, FC Bayern failed in the neutral Stegaurach with 1: 2 at SpVgg Ansbach 09 .
