Season course
Without competition from Bundesliga promoted Borussia Mönchengladbach (1965), Fortuna Düsseldorf and Rot-Weiss Essen in 1966, last year's third-placed TSV Alemannia Aachen won the championship in the west with coach Michael Pfeiffer . However, over the entire lap there was an exciting race for two places for the Bundesliga promotion round between Aachen, Schwarz-Weiß Essen, Arminia Bielefeld, VfL Bochum and Sportfreunde Hamborn 07. After the preliminary round, Arminia Bielefeld led the table, in the second half the team from Essen's Uhlenkrug stood at the top of the table for nine weeks. Coach Horst Witzler missed winning the title with Essen by scoring 1: 3 points in the last two round games against Marl-Hüls and Hagen. Bielefeld lost on the final day without striker Ernst Kuster with 0: 1 goals against the team of coach Alfred Preißler , at Wuppertaler SV. Last year's climber, VfL Bochum, impressed with its advance to fourth place in the table. The development work by coach Hubert Schieth paid off. The Bielefeld offensive with Gerd Roggensack, Ernst Kuster, Bernd Kirchner and Dietmar Erler scored the most goals in the west with 72 goals. The top scorer list was led by Kuster with 23 goals. This was followed by Gustav Eversberg (Bochum) with 20 gates, Helmut Richert (Leverkusen) 15 and Franz Krauthausen (RWO) with 14 gates. For the 1967/68 round, the following players from Regionalliga West got a contract in the Bundesliga:
- Klaus Ackermann (Prussia Münster)
- Hermann Erlhoff (TSV Marl-Hüls)
- Dieter Feller (Prussia Münster)
- Paul Heyeres (Alemannia Aachen)
- Erwin Kostedde (Prussia Munster)
- Gerd Roggensack (Arminia Bielefeld)
- Jürgen Rynio (Eintracht Gelsenkirchen)
- Hans-Joachim Schellberg (Eintracht Duisburg)

Season course
Bundesliga relegated Borussia Neunkirchen won the championship in the southwest with two points ahead of 1. FC Saarbrücken. The team from the Ellenfeldstadion won both matches against their rivals from the state capital. In Neunkirchen, the team of coach Željko Čajkovski (brother of Zlatko Čajkovski ) prevailed in front of 25,000 spectators with 2-0 goals and in Saarbrücken's Ludwigsparkstadion in front of 40,000 spectators with a 1-0 away win. This success is enhanced by the fact that Neunkirchen, Werner Görts and Heinz Simmet, lost two high-performing players to the Bundesliga in the summer of 1966. Last year's champion FK Pirmasens came in 6th place and played no role in the awarding of the title. The placement of SV Weisenau in 3rd place was surprising. Coach Erich Gehbauer and his team scored three points in the derbies against FSV Mainz 05 and center forward Alfred Brecht also scored the top scorer's crown with 26 goals. Hans Linsenmaier (Borussia Neunkirchen) and Emil Poklitar from 1. FC Saarbrücken took the places behind the striker von Weisenau with 19 goals each. For the newcomer from the amateur league Rhineland, Germania Metternich from the Koblenz district, the round turned into a sporting fiasco. Without a single win, only with three draws against relegated Bellheim, Worms and Saar 05 Saarbrücken, the round ended for the Moselaner. Since the two derbies against TuS Neuendorf were lost with 2: 3 and 0: 3 goals, the year Regionalliga was a bitter experience for Metternich. For the 1967/68 round, the players Horst Berg and Jürgen Rohweder (both SV Saar 05 Saarbrücken), Manfred Gärtner and Horst Schauß (both 1. FC Saarbrücken) and Hugo Ulm (Phoenix Bellheim) switched to the Bundesliga.

Season course
On the last match day, May 14, 1967, the top three in the table showed no nerves and won their games safely. Offenbach and Fürth each 4-0 against Darmstadt and Schwaben Augsburg and Hof with 4-1 goals against the Stuttgarter Kickers. Thus the ranking remained with Offenbach as champions, Hof as runner-up and SpVgg Fürth as third, only two points behind. The coaches Kurt Baluses (Kickers Offenbach) and Heinz Elzner (Bayern Hof) entered the Bundesliga promotion round with their teams. Last year's champion FC Schweinfurt 05 could not build on the performance from the world championship year as defending champion and ended up in 10th place. Striker Rolf Schweighöfer had moved to Werder Bremen and the starting game, which was lost with 0-2 goals at the newly promoted Germania Wiesbaden on August 21, 1966, was to trigger an unsatisfactory round for the defending champions. The best goal scorers in the south were Bernd Windhausen (SpVgg Fürth) with 31 goals, Kurt Haseneder (Schwaben Augsburg) and Wolfgang Breuer (Bayern Hof) with 28 goals each. The players Horst Haug (Stuttgarter Kickers), Klaus Slatina (SpVgg Fürth), Lutz Streitenbürger (VfR Mannheim) and the three Kasselans Karl Loweg , Horst Schaub and Bernd Schmidt made the way into the Bundesliga for the 1967/68 round .

Promotion round to the Bundesliga
Group 1
Southwest champion Borussia Neunkirchen opened the promotion round on the second match day, on May 24, 1967 in front of 25,000 spectators with a 2-1 home win against northern champion Arminia Hannover. Four days later, after the 2: 5 defeat at Bayern Hof (three goals from Wolfgang Breuer ), disillusionment returned. This was followed by the second home game against Schwarz-Weiß Essen, which was beaten 2-0 with two goals by Wolfgang Gayer . After the 2-1 success at Hertha BSC on June 4, the Saarlanders were back on the ascent track with 6-2 points. After that, they had ten days to prepare for the tough game at Arminia Hannover. The better reserves of strength decided the game for Borussia in the second half of the game. While Arminia was still leading with 3-1 goals after the first 45 minutes, Neunkirchen won the game with 4: 3 goals after 90 minutes with three more goals. The revenge against Hof was clearly successful in the second leg with a 4-0 win, and so the encounter on June 21 at Schwarz-Weiß Essen decided on promotion. Striker Hans Walitza brought the Uhlenkrug-Elf 1-0 lead in the 18th minute, but Wolfgang Gayer equalized in the 67th minute to make it 1-1 and Neunkirchen was able to score 11: 3 on the last day of the match was a 0-1 defeat in the Ellenfeldstadion against the bottom bracket Hertha BSC - the promotion round can no longer be displaced from first place.
Borussia Neunkirchen used the following players in the promotion round:
Horst Kirsch , Gerd Regitz , Peter Czernotzky , Günter Kuntz , Erich Leist , Dieter Schock , Jürgen Pontes , Wolfgang Gayer , Ludwig Lang , Erich Hermesdorf , Hans Linsenmaier , Jürgen Fuhrmann .
