Career

Gustav Eversberg began his career at SC Dahlhausen . After the round in 1963/64 of the Association League Westphalia , Eversberg moved to league rivals VfL Bochum . The team of President Ottokar Wüst and coach Hubert Schieth won the championship in Westphalia in 1964/65 and rose to the regional league after three play-offs (4: 1; 0: 1; 1: 1 n.V.) against SpVgg Erkenschwick after a coin tossing decision West on. During the ascent, the teammates Horst Christopeit (goalkeeper), Gerd Wiesemes , Heinz Hermani and Karl-Heinz Böttcher were on the side of the attacking midfielder Eversberg. Eversberg is led by Castroper Strasse with 31 games and 20 goals in the association league for the team. In the debut round in the Regionalliga West, 1965/66, the blue-whites of VfL Bochum finished 12th and Eversberg had scored twelve goals in 32 league games. In the second regional league year, 1966/67, VfL already belonged to the top group in the west with fourth place. With 20 goals he finished second behind top scorer Ernst Kuster from Arminia Bielefeld in the West goalscorer list. This as a midfielder and not as a center forward. Also in the third year, 1967/68, he led the internal VfL goalscorer list with 15 goals in front of the talent Werner Balte with 14 goals; VfL finished fifth under the new coach Hermann Eppenhoff .

His greatest sporting success, however, was reaching the DFB Cup final in 1968 . In the first main round, on January 27, 1968, in a 3-1 home win against Karlsruher SC, he got the goal in the 70th minute to make it 3-2. In the quarter-finals, 2-0 win against Borussia Mönchengladbach and in the semi-final against FC Bayern Munich (2-1), the "magic triangle" in midfield of VfL with its two colleagues Erich Schiller and Hans-Jürgen Jansen proved that it wasn't could only shine and prevail in the regional Regionalliga West. In the game against the team of coach Hennes Weisweiler , Eversberg and colleagues had it with the parade midfield of the "Bökelbergelf" with Peter Dietrich , Günter Netzer and Herbert L Bäumen and in the game against FC Bayern with their greats Franz Beckenbauer , Franz Roth , Rainer Ohlhauser , Gerd Müller and Dieter Brenninger had to do. In the final on June 9, 1968, however, 1. FC Köln with offensive forces such as Wolfgang Overath , Heinz Flohe , Carl-Heinz Rühl , Johannes Löhr and Heinz Hornig proved to be superior in a 4-1 victory.

On December 8, 1968, Eversberg was seriously injured in the championship game against Arminia Bielefeld and had to end his career at the age of 28 as a sports invalid due to the consequences of the cruciate ligament rupture . During the first half of the 1968/69 season, Eversberg had scored eight goals in 13 league games.

After his official career end, he still played for the Bochum district division club DJK Teutonia Ehrenfeld . Later he worked as a trainer for TuS Querenburg and TuS Stockum in addition to his work as a machine fitter at Heinrichshütte in Hattingen.
