Herbert L Bäumen (born August 11, 1943 in Munich Gladbach ) is a former German soccer player who played for Borussia Mönchengladbach from 1962 to 1971 and was German champion with the club in 1970 and 1971 . He also played in the Bundesliga from 1971 to 1973 for Werder Bremen and 1973/74 for 1. FC Kaiserslautern and 1974/75 in France for the first division club FC Metz . The offensive midfielder, who played 267 games in the Bundesliga and scored 121 goals, also played in two friendly matches for the national team in 1968.

Career

Youth, Oberliga and Regionalliga West, until 1965

Without siblings, Herbert L Bäumen grew up with his mother in the Mönchengladbach district of Lürrip; Father Josef was killed in Russia during World War II. At the age of nine he was registered in the youth department of Borussia Mönchengladbach. He had talent and a great passion for football. In the B-youth he was with his teammates Niederrheinmeister and two years later won the West German championship with the A-youth. On July 5, 1962, the VfL youth beat Westfalia Herne 4-0 in the stadium at Schloss Strünkede in front of 7,000 spectators, and Lmouth scored a goal. Other players were defender Horst-Dieter Höttges and center runner Walter Wimmer .

In 1962, the trained book printer Herbert Lrecken came from the VfL youth team to the Borussia Mönchengladbach league team for the last season of the old first-class football league West . In his first two rounds in senior football, Fritz Langner was the coach at Bökelberg, before Hennes Weisweiler from Cologne took up the coaching position in Mönchengladbach at the end of April 1964 . On the fifth game day, on September 17, 1962, the young talent celebrated his debut in the Oberliga West. In the 3-1 away win at Wuppertaler SV, he signed the scorers list. Franz Brungs and Ulrich Kohn set the tone in the Borussia attack . In the football Oberliga West, the young player came in the 1962/63 season on 15 missions and scored six goals. In the first year of the West Regional Football League , 1963/64, he was able to increase his playing time to 21 league games with nine goals. It was his two years of apprenticeship in contract football. During this time he practiced his profession as a printer; He worked the morning shift at his company in Düsseldorf from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. so that he could be at the Bökelberg training at 3 p.m. It was only Weisweiler who realized that the hopeful VfL talents also need encouragement and support (from employers) outside the field. After winning the championship in 1964/65 - at that time L Thumbs still played in the old World Cup system on the right wing and scored six goals in 26 appearances - in the Regionalliga West with three points ahead of Alemannia Aachen, Gladbach sat in the promotion round against SSV Reutlingen, Holstein Kiel and Wormatia Worms. The main formation of the VfL attack consisted of the strikers Lmouth, Jupp Heynckes , Bernd Rupp , Günter Netzer and Werner Waddey .

Bundesliga, 1965 to 1974

Also in Borussia's debut year in the Bundesliga, 1965/66, L ... (22/6) stormed the unloved post on the right wing. When Jupp Heynckes was injured on the 32nd matchday on May 14, 1966 in the away game against the eventual German champions TSV 1860 Munich, he stormed for the first time in his ideal position as a "hanging point", pushing forward from midfield and looking for a goal. The promoted team scored a 3-3 draw against Max Merkel's team and L Bäumen scored all three goals for Borussia against Löwen goalkeeper Petar Radenković . When the soccer World Cup took place in England in July 1966, L thanks to his friendship with Berti Vogts as a guest of trainer Weisweiler was 14 days on "educational leave" on the island. From a discussion with the coach about its most effective use in the VfL attack, something like the second starting shot for Laumen's career developed. He stormed from the 1966/67 season in a 4-3-3 system as an attacking midfielder and scored 18 goals in 31 league games. Now he was able to fully demonstrate his shooting power in both legs, the strength of his headers, his goal instinct and his running strength. He was now in Borussia's offensive, he enjoyed Weisweiler's trust and thanked him with goals on the assembly line.

From 1966/67 to 1970/71, the dangerous attacking midfielder completed 164 Bundesliga games and scored 90 goals. From April 1, 1967 to February 13, 1971, he played 131 Bundesliga games in a row and on March 6, 1968 he made his debut in the 3-1 victory in Brussels against Belgium with a goal in the national team.

He was part of the championship team in 1970 and 1971 . When he first won the championship in 1970 he was Borussia's number one top scorer with 19 goals, clearly ahead of Horst Köppel with nine and Ulrik Le Fevre with eight. Even when he successfully defended his title in the Bundesliga for the first time in 1971, L ... led the Borussia goalscorer list with 20 goals; but now just before the returnee Jupp Heynckes with 19 hits. Surprisingly, national coach Helmut Schön did not consider Lektiven for the 1970 World Cup in Mexico. When the DFB reported to FIFA on April 23, 1970, he was still a member of the 40s squad; the final course from May 4 to 14, 1970 in Malente took place without the Gladbach goal scorer. As the most successful striker of the German champions of the 1970 World Cup, this was the greatest disappointment of his career. On November 4, 1970, he played in front of 42,700 spectators in Goodison Park against FC Everton one of his best games. Lazier fought a great duel with Alan Ball and scored the 1-1 equalizer in the 35th minute of the game. In extra time he hit the crossbar with a header, and in a penalty shootout he missed the second penalty for Gladbach.

He became famous on April 3, 1971, when he fell into the goal net after a scene in the penalty area during the broken post game between Borussia Mönchengladbach and Werder Bremen , whereupon the post broke. Since there was no replacement for the damaged goal, the game was canceled and the score at the “green table” for Bremen.

On September 30th, 1967, in the game Borussia Mönchengladbach against Hannover 96 (final score 5: 1), Herbert L Bäumen achieved the longest “flawless hat trick” within seven minutes. It was noteworthy that L ... scored a goal with his left foot, one with his right foot and a goal with his head. He set the end of the game when he also scored the 5: 1 for Borussia Mönchengladbach.

Departure from Bökelberg and end of career, 1971 to 1979

After the second championship title, he moved to Werder Bremen , which he later described as a mistake; there he became part of the so-called "million eleven". With Werder he reached eleventh place twice and scored 18 goals in 60 Bundesliga games. In the 1973/74 season he played for 1. FC Kaiserslautern and scored six goals in 21 Bundesliga games, with the Palatinate team reaching sixth place. He then played one season in France, reached 8th place with FC Metz and ended there with 19 first division games, in which he scored four goals, his professional career.

In 1975/76 he joined the SpVgg Neu-Isenburg , which had been promoted to the third-class Association League Hessen . The team finished the season in 14th place out of 18 teams. From 1976 to 1979 he let his playing career end with the Lower Rhine regional division Weseler SV , where other ex-Bundesliga professionals played with Werner "Eia" Krämer as player-coach and goalkeepers Volker Danner and Kurt Büns .

After the playing career

Today L Bäumen, who after his active career at a company for car and two-wheeler accessories was district manager of the Lower Rhine, is a regular guest at the Bundesliga games of Borussia Mönchengladbach. He also organizes the veterans' meetings of former Borussia players who meet in the VIP lounge for Borussia home games. In honor of Hennes Weisweiler , the most famous coach of Borussia Mönchengladbach, he takes care of the "Weisweilerelf", founded in the early 1990s , at regular intervals with former Bundesliga players. He is also a member of Borussia's honorary council .
