Borussia Mönchengladbach became the first in the 1970/71 season of the German Bundesliga and thus German men's championship .
Season overview
Before the last match day, Bayern Munich and defending champion Borussia Mönchengladbach were tied on points, Bayern were better by one goal difference. But on the last day of the match they lost 2-0 in Duisburg , while the Gladbachers won 4-1 in Frankfurt and became German champions again. This was the first successful title defense in the history of the Bundesliga. On the 27th matchday something memorable happened: During the game Mönchengladbach against Werder Bremen , the goal post broke when the score was 1-1. Since it could not be repaired or replaced, the game was rated 2-0 for Bremen.
Vice-champion Bayern Munich won the DFB Cup . For the UEFA Cup , Hertha BSC , Eintracht Braunschweig and Hamburger SV qualified in third to fifth place , as did the runner-up cup winner 1. FC Köln instead of cup winner Bayern Munich.
The top scorer was surprisingly Lothar Kobluhn from Rot-Weiß Oberhausen with 24 goals.
Bribery scandal
In the 1970/71 season the Bundesliga scandal fell , in which the relegation-threatened clubs Arminia Bielefeld and Rot-Weiß Oberhausen paid money to players from other clubs so that they could achieve certain game results. The scandal was uncovered by the club president of the relegated Offenbacher, Horst-Gregorio Canellas , on June 6, 1971 at the celebration of his 50th birthday. As a result of the scandal, Arminia Bielefeld's license was revoked in the following season and several players, coaches and officials were banned, some for life.
