Horst-Gregorio Canellas (born June 6, 1921 in Plauen , † July 23, 1999 in Offenbach am Main ), Spanish spelling Cañellas , was a German-Spanish entrepreneur and football official . As president of the then first division Kickers Offenbach , he uncovered the first Bundesliga scandal in German professional football.

Life

Canellas was born as the son of a Spanish entrepreneur and a German in the Vogtland , where he grew up. After the Second World War, he took German citizenship and moved to Hesse. He was managing director of the eponymous 1954 wholesale for tropical fruits in Frankfurt . In 1964 he became president of the Offenbacher Kickers, which were playing in the Regionalliga Süd at the time . After two failures in the promotion round, the club succeeded in the third attempt in 1968, promotion to the Bundesliga. However, the Kickers failed to keep the class; they took last place in the 1968/69 season and had to relegate. In the following season, the OFC was champion of the Regionalliga Süd and, after winning his promotion round group, again made it to the Bundesliga. But even in their second Bundesliga season the Offenbachers were threatened with direct relegation. Canellas found that games in the relegation battle were bought through cash payments to players, and went on to pretend the bribes. He secretly made tape recordings. His attempts to inform the DFB of the events were dismissed as "vague assumptions" and ignored by the DFB Bundesliga advisor Wilfried Straub and the DFB general secretary Hans Paßlack.

To celebrate his 50th birthday, Canellas invited DFB greats and press representatives to his place on June 6, 1971 . The day before, the 1970/71 season of the Bundesliga came to an end with the relegation of the Offenbacher Kickers. To their surprise, Canellas played his tape recordings to the guests, which proved the fraud in the Bundesliga. The invited and present DFB national coach Helmut Schön quickly left the party after this unveiling. Extensive investigations to clear up smuggling and bribery began. Canellas, who resigned as President of the OFC on the same day, was subsequently banned from all offices for life by the DFB Sports Court. However, this judgment was overturned in 1976.

In 1974 he gave up the management of his wholesale business. When the plane “Landshut” was hijacked on October 13, 1977 on the scheduled flight from Mallorca to Frankfurt, Canellas and his daughter were on board as passengers. Both survived the hostage rescue in Mogadishu .

The entrepreneur, suffering from health problems, died of lung cancer on July 23, 1999 after a long illness .
