Weyland discovered his interest in refereeing already in the youth team of Blau-Weiß Oberhausen, he directed his first game in 1948. In a record time of only five years Weyland whistled through the lower divisions, supported and encouraged by his friend and referee colleague from Oberhausen Günther Ternieden . In 1954, the “ Lange Weyland ”, as he was called by everyone, played his first league game and made his Bundesliga debut on September 14, 1963 in the game Hamburger SV against Eintracht Frankfurt (3-0). He developed into one of the most consistent German referees of the 1960s. In 1966 he was appointed to the group of FIFA referees, to which he was a member until 1976. In 1973, Hans-Joachim Weyland headed the UEFA Super Cup final between Ajax Amsterdam and Glasgow Rangers (3-2). The highlight of his career was the nomination for the soccer world championship 1974 in Germany, where he led the preliminary round match Poland against Italy (2-1) in Stuttgart. The referee also received invitations from other European countries to play points games and said goodbye with a series of game directors in the USA.

The 192 cm tall, carefully whistling Weyland has often been described as a giant by the press , including in 1973 by the Daily Mail after the UEFA Super Cup final. "Another star of this evening was the giant West German referee, Ian Weyland… The man, who most deserved our praise."

His principle: “ A good referee shouldn't behave like the most important man on the pitch, but should hold back a little and try to bring the game over time in the interests of the spectators and football. "
