In civil life, Collum is a religious studies teacher in North Lanarkshire . He teaches at St. Aidan's High School in Wishaw and the Catholic Cardinal Newman High School in Bellshill . The latter was also head of the religion department until 2011, but gave up this work in favor of his work as an arbitrator.
