Gianluca Rocchi (born August 25, 1973 in Florence ) is an Italian football referee .

career

Rocchi began his professional football referee career in 2000 in Serie C ; its first use in the Serie A was on the final day of the 2003/04 season, the 2: 1 victory of US Lecce against Reggina Calcio on 16 May 2004. The following season he came to three, in the 2005/06 season on eleven missions. In the following two seasons he regularly whistled Serie A games, a total of 38, including two derbies between Juventus and FC Turin and between Lazio and AS Roma . in the 2007/08 season he also led the prestige duel between Juventus Turin and Inter Milan . So far he has made a total of 56 appearances in Serie A. (As of October 19, 2008)

Since the beginning of 2008 Rocchi has been whistling international encounters; so he was in qualifying matches for the U-19 and U-21 European Championships . He was also in charge of two UEFA Cup qualifying games as well as VfL Wolfsburg's 1-0 home win against Rapid Bucharest in the first round of the competition . He was also the referee of the 3-1 victory of FC Schalke 04 against Paris Saint-Germain in the 2008/09 UEFA Cup on October 23, 2008. In the 2010/11 Champions League , he was referee for the first game of Schalke scheduled in the group stage against Benfica Lisbon .

In the summer of 2012 he first accompanied Nicola Rizzoli as a gate judge to the European Championship and then took to the field himself at the Olympic Games in London .

On September 17, 2013, Rocchi led the first encounter in the group stage of the 2013/14 UEFA Champions League of FC Bayern Munich against PFK ZSKA Moscow . In October 2014 Rocchi whistled the match between Juventus Turin and AS Roma , which even kept parliament busy because of wrong decisions.

After Nicola Rizzoli had represented Italy as a referee at major tournaments for years, Rocchi received his first nomination for a major FIFA men's tournament in 2017 with his appointment as one of nine referees at the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup in Russia . FIFA nominated him for the 2018 World Cup on March 29, 2018 . Elenito Di Liberatore and Mauro Tonolini accompanied him as assistants .

On May 13, 2019, UEFA nominated him for the 2018/19 UEFA Europa League final between Chelsea FC and Arsenal FC on May 29, 2019 in Baku, Azerbaijan . On the sidelines he was supported by Filippo Meli and Lorenzo Manganelli, while Daniele Orsato took over the role of fourth official . Massimiliano Irrati was the video referee.
