Tofiq Bəhramov ( Russian Тофик Бахрамов , transcription Tofik Bachramow ; born January 29, 1925 , † March 26, 1993 ) was a Soviet football referee of Azerbaijani origin.

Career

Bəhramov was initially a player, but injured himself and had to give up the active game. He then became a referee and, in 1964, a FIFA referee. He later became general secretary of the Azerbaijan Football Association. He died in Azerbaijan in March 1993 at the age of 68.

Bəhramov assisted the Swiss referee Gottfried Dienst in the 1966 World Cup final between England and Germany . He asked Bəhramov about an unclear situation in the 101st minute. With a clear wave of his hand and a nod of his head, he indicated that Geoff Hurst's shot had crossed the goal line. Dienst decided on goal, the score was 3: 2. England won 4-2.

The linesman described in a book he published in 1971 that he saw the situation in such a way that Hurst's shot did not come back from the lower edge of the crossbar, but from the net, which clearly showed that it was a goal. Whether the ball then touched the ground in front of or behind the line was irrelevant. He didn't see this either.

Bəhramov had previously made headlines when, as referee, he denied a clearly regular Swiss goal in the group game between Switzerland and Spain . Switzerland then lost the game 1: 2 and was eliminated.

souvenir

The national stadium of Azerbaijan is called Tofiq Bəhramov Stadium . There is a statue of him in front of the stadium, which was unveiled by Geoff Hurst , Michel Platini and FIFA President Sepp Blatter . The Azerbaijani Post issued a stamp in honor of Tofiq Bəhrəmov in 1997 on the occasion of the 1998 World Cup .
