Bogdan Dotschew ( Bulgarian Богдан Дочев ; born June 26, 1936 in Varna ; † May 29, 2017 ) was a Bulgarian football player and referee .

Athletic career

Dotschew played for Cherno More Varna , Spartak Varna , Vatev Beloslav , Levski Sofia and athlete Kremikowzi . During his time with Levski Sofia between 1961 and 1964, the striker scored four goals in 30 championship games.

In the early 1970s, Dotschew began his referee career, and from 1977 he directed international games. At the World Cup tournaments in 1982 and 1986 he was one of the referees nominated by FIFA , where he headed a final game. In addition, he was used as a linesman at tournaments , with games with his participation going down in the annals of football history. The 1982 World Cup match between Brazil and Italy is considered to be one of the best in the history of the World Cup, not least because of the swaying course of the game and its importance for the outcome of the tournament and the tactical style of play. Four years later, the clash between Argentina and England became famous for two game situations. In the 2-1 success of the South Americans, Diego Maradona 's goal , which was later chosen to be the World Cup goal of the century , was preceded by the latter's irregular goal to make it 1-0 when the " hand of God " maneuvered the ball into the goal. Linesman Dotschew gave referee Ali Bin Nasser no signal about Maradona's handball.

Probably his most important game at international level, Dotschew experienced 1983 when he directed the first leg of the 1982/83 UEFA Cup between RSC Anderlecht and Benfica Lisbon . He worked as a referee until 1987 and received the FIFA gold badge for his services.
