Károly Palotai
Károly Palotai (born September 11, 1935 in Békéscsaba , Hungary ; † February 3, 2018 in Győr ) was a Hungarian football player and referee .
He himself played successfully soccer with the Hungarian first division club Győri ETO FC and won the gold medal with the national team at the 1964 Summer Olympics in Tokyo . But he became world famous as one of the outstanding referees of the 1970s and 1980s.
In addition to numerous national games, he also directed a large number of games on an international level. The highlights were the three participations in the soccer world championships 1974 , 1978 and 1982 as well as the soccer championship 1980 and the Olympic Games 1976 in Montreal . He also led the finals in the 1976 European Cup between FC Bayern Munich and AS Saint-Étienne , and in 1981 between Real Madrid and Liverpool , the final in the European Cup Winners' Cup between FC Barcelona and Fortuna Düsseldorf in 1979, and the first leg of the The 1974/75 UEFA Cup final between Borussia Mönchengladbach and FC Twente Enschede .
