Herbert Fandel (born March 9, 1964 in Bitburg ) is a German pianist and former football referee .

Life

Fandel grew up in Utscheid- Russdorf; he attended grammar school in Neuerburg and graduated from high school in 1983. Full-time is Fandel pianist and since 1999 principal of the music school Bitburg-Prüm . In 2010 he became head of the cultural office in the Eifel district Bitburg-Prüm. Herbert Fandel began his musical career by studying piano in Cologne , Vienna and Salzburg . He was the winner of the Mendelssohn Competition in Cologne in 1988, made radio recordings and gave concerts at home and abroad.

Fandel, who has been in possession of the referee's license since 1979, began his referee career in the Eifel with the football club DJK Utscheid . In 1989 he was included in the DFB referee list. From 1993 he headed more than 50 games in the second division and from 1996 a total of 247 Bundesliga games .

From 1998 Fandel was a FIFA referee. He took part in the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney and was referee for the 2008 European Championships in Austria and Switzerland , initially with the preliminary round matches between Portugal and Turkey and the Netherlands against France . In the 2000/01 , 2004/05 and 2006/07 seasons as well as in the 2007/2008 season together with Markus Merk , Fandel was elected German referee of the season by the DFB's referee committee.

In the Bundesliga, Fandel showed 1041 yellow cards , 47 yellow and red cards and 26 red cards in 247 matches .

On June 2, 2007, he led the European Championship qualifier between Denmark and Sweden in Copenhagen . At the advice of his assistant Volker Wezel , he showed the Danish player Christian Poulsen the red card in the 89th minute after his strike in his own penalty area against Markus Rosenberg and decided on a penalty . He was then physically attacked by a Danish fan and hit in the neck. He therefore stopped the game when the score was 3: 3. The UEFA assessed the game later in accordance with the regulations as a victory for the Swedish team.

Fandel passes on his international experience as a soccer referee in lectures. In June 2009 he ended his referee career.

On May 21, 2010 Herbert Fandel became chairman of the DFB referee commission. He has been a member of the UEFA Referees Committee since 2011.
