International football match Denmark - Sweden 2007

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The international football match Denmark - Sweden 2007 was a qualifying game for the European Football Championship 2008 (Group F), in which the Danish national football team competed on June 2, 2007 in their home park in Copenhagen against the eleven from Sweden . The game was abandoned in the 89th minute when the score was 3: 3 after the German referee Herbert Fandel was attacked by a Danish fan. Previously, Fandel decided on a penalty for Sweden and a red card for the Danish player Christian Poulsen . The UEFA regarded the game as a 0: 3 win for Sweden.

Starting position

Before the game, the Swedes were well on their way to participate in the 2008 European Football Championship in Switzerland and Austria. Denmark, on the other hand, had to win the game to have a realistic chance of participating.

The game

Course of the game

After just seven minutes, the Swedes took the lead through Johan Elmander after a serious mistake by Danish defender Michael Gravgaard . In the 22nd minute Christian Wilhelmsson increased to 2-0, before Elmander increased the result to 3-0 four minutes later. Daniel Agger shortened to 1: 3 shortly before the break. This goal should be the start of a comeback. After 62 minutes, Jon Dahl Tomasson marked the 2: 3. In the 75th minute, Leon Andreasen made it 3: 3.

Shortly before the end there was a scandal. Denmark's midfielder Christian Poulsen hit his Swedish opponent Markus Rosenberg in the stomach in the penalty area , whereupon he collapsed. Referee Herbert Fandel was informed of this by his assistant Volker Wezel and decided on a penalty for the foul and sent Poulsen off the pitch for the assault . Then a Danish supporter ran onto the pitch and attacked the referee, who broke off the game after 89 minutes of play .

Sanctions

In retrospect, the game by UEFA on June 8, 2007 was rated 3-0 for Sweden on the recommendation of the referee team.

The Danes had to play the next four home games more than 250 kilometers from Copenhagen. A foreign venue was even considered. We were talking about the Volkspark Stadium (at that time AOL Arena ) in Hamburg . This plan was rejected after a reduction in the sentence. Ultimately, the remaining home games were played in Aarhus .

Reactions

Both sides were very outraged by the events. Morten Olsen , the Danish coach, spoke of a black day for Danish football. Here Christian Poulsen was partially made a scapegoat. Olsen described Poulsen's act as an inexcusable act. Herbert Fandel himself saw Christian Poulsen as the culprit for the fan attack. Christian Poulsen, who knows Fandel from times together in the Bundesliga (Poulsen played for FC Schalke 04 from 2002 to 2006 ), was very sorry for his act. Lars Lagerbäck , the coach of Tre Kronor at the time , would have preferred to get the three points in a sporty way, on the grounds that nobody was injured in this game.

The Spanish team playing in the same group, however, was anything but pleased with the fact that the game was rated 3-0 for Sweden; the later qualifying group winner from the Iberian Peninsula ended up temporarily in third place in the table.

After the game

After the game, the Danes only had theoretical chances of successfully qualifying for the finals. The second leg on September 8, 2007 in Solna ended 0-0. In the end, the Danes only finished fourth in the table, while Sweden qualified as second in the table, as did Spain, the first in the table.

In the qualification for the 2010 FIFA World Cup , both teams met again. This time the Danes retained the upper hand with two 1-0 wins and, unlike Sweden, qualified for the 2010 World Cup.
