Beginnings

Elmander started playing football at Holmalunds IF in his hometown Alingsås. For the third division , the striker made his debut in 1997 in the men's team. Several European and national teams such as Aston Villa , FC Barcelona and IFK Göteborg became aware of the 17-year-old talent, but he moved within Sweden to Örgryte IS in the Allsvenskan . There he scored two goals in his first season and he took fourth place in the Swedish elite series with the Gothenburg club. In the summer of 2000, he left the club in order for a transfer fee of 25 million Swedish kronor in the Dutch Eredivisie to change.

First steps abroad

Feyenoord Rotterdam became the new employer of the 19-year-old young player . Here he met Bonaventure Kalou and Jon Dahl Tomasson , but was still used in his first season in half of the season's games. When Pierre van Hooijdonk and Robin van Persie were signed in the following season , his situation hardly improved. However, he was substituted on in the 2001/02 UEFA Cup final by Feyenoord coach Bert van Marwijk and thus contributed to the 3-2 win over Borussia Dortmund and thus the title.

Nevertheless, Elmander was loaned to Sweden in 2002, after he had come back for Feyenoord at the beginning of the season, where he signed with Djurgårdens IF . He was able to assert himself as a regular and contributed to winning the championship title in the second half of the 2002 season . He was also with the club in the cup final, which was won by a goal by Louay Chanko through Golden Goal . Also at the beginning of the following season he proved his goal risk, but left the club, which was again champions at the end of the season, in the summer because the loan contract expired. However, Feyenoord loaned him out again, this time within the Netherlands, where he was staying at NAC Breda . Here, too, he established himself as a regular player, but was not as accurate as in Sweden.

For the 2004/2005 season Elmander was signed by the Danish club Brøndby IF , where he signed a four-year contract. With the club he won the Danish championship and cup double in 2005 and was named Player of the Year at the club at the end of the season . In his second season in Denmark he scored 13 goals this season.

In France and England

After the World Cup, Elmander moved to the French first division club FC Toulouse . The French transferred a transfer fee of five million euros, some of which Brøndby IF had to cede to Feyenoord. For his new club he scored double digits in the league in his first two seasons.

Following the tournament in June 2008, Elmander signed a three-year contract with English Premier League club Bolton Wanderers , who signed him for a transfer fee of ten million pounds. Part of the transfer was a simultaneous move by Daniel Braaten from Wanderers to Toulouse FC . At his new employer he was able to establish himself straight away as a regular in attack alongside Kevin Davies . At the side of Gary Cahill , Matthew Taylor , Jussi Jääskeläinen and Kevin Nolan , he and the team occupied a place in the lower midfield despite the small budget available. With players like Zat Knight , Lee Chung-yong and Ivan Klasnić strengthened, the club could not build on the good season and slipped into the relegation battle, especially since Elmander only scored two goals by the turn of the year. Therefore, the club replaced coach Gary Megson on December 30th by Owen Coyle , under whose direction the team distanced themselves by nine points from the relegation ranks by the end of the season. At times Elmander had to take a seat on the bench, but at the beginning of the 2010/11 season he was again a regular. He shone as a regular goalscorer and was briefly at the top of the scorers list. Thanks to his good performance, he was voted Player of the Month for November and subsequently considered a possible candidate for transfer in the winter transfer period.

Change to Turkey

Elmander played for the Turkish first division club Galatasaray Istanbul from the 2011/12 season , with whom he signed a contract until 2014. On September 18, 2011, he made his debut in the game against Samsunspor , when he came on in the 61st minute for the injured Emmanuel Eboué . In this game he scored his first goal for the club.

National team

Despite his reserve role in Rotterdam, he made his debut for the Swedish national team on February 13, 2002 when he came on for Marcus Allbäck in the 2-2 draw against Greece . In the summer of 2004 he was one of the pillars of the Swedish U21 selection at the 2004 European Championships , in which the team only failed in the semifinals and ultimately took fourth place. After a good season at Brøndby IF, he joined the squad for the 2006 World Cup in summer 2006 . In that tournament he made two short appearances. Because of his good performance in Toulouse, national coach Lars Lagerbäck called Elmander for the 2008 European Championship in summer 2008 . The tournament turned out to be disappointing, although Elmander was on the field in all three preliminary round games: After a 2-0 win against defending champions Greece with goals from Zlatan Ibrahimović and Petter Hansson at the beginning, the team lost the following games against Russia and later title holder Spain and retired at the end of the group stage.
