Kevin Anthony Jance Nolan (born June 24, 1982 in Liverpool ) is an English football player and coach . As a midfielder , he was initially active for almost ten years, mostly in the Premier League for Bolton Wanderers , before moving to Newcastle United in early 2009 and to West Ham United in June 2011 .

Career

Bolton Wanderers

The midfielder began his football career in the student selection of his hometown Liverpool. He was quickly in the focus of Liverpool FC , but ultimately he was drawn to the youth department of Bolton Wanderers . Originally, Nolan was a trained center- back , but as he made his way through the club's reserve selection, he moved to midfield. In March 2000, Nolan came against Charlton Athletic (2-2) as a substitute for his second division debut and the following year he was a regular in the team who achieved promotion to the Premier League in the 2000/01 season . In his first appearance in the top English division, he contributed two goals to the 5-0 season opener win at Leicester City in August 2001 . He became a crowd favorite shortly afterwards when Nolan scored another goal for a 2-1 win at Old Trafford against Manchester United and by the end of his first year in the Premier League he had accumulated eight goals.

After a mixed sporty season in 2002/03 with just one goal and a lot of substitute bench experience, things turned for the better when Nolan was the best scorer in the team in the 2003/04 season and led his team to the league cup final - it ended with a 1: 2 -Loss to Middlesbrough FC . During his club's first participation in the UEFA Cup in the 2005/06 season, he scored another two goals and quite a few expert voices called for his nomination to the English senior team at the time . However, he was denied a use with the "Three Lions" and after a final appearance for Bolton against Blackburn Rovers , Nolan moved to Newcastle United in January 2009 for a transfer fee of four million pounds . In total, he played 345 competitive games for the Bolton Wanderers, in which he scored exactly 50 goals.

Newcastle United

In the remaining games of the 2008/09 season, Nolan could not prevent the first division relegation of the "Magpies". He had already seen a red card on his third appearance after a foul on Victor Anichebe from Everton FC and - made difficult by an ankle injury - initially showed himself in poor shape before he was the expected top performer at the end of the season. On the way to the direct resurgence , Nolan developed into the central control point in the game of Newcastle United and in addition to the award for the best second division player by the football magazine FourFourTwo , the players' union PFA voted him into the “ PFA Team of the Year ”.

For the new 2010/11 season, Nolan took over the position of team captain as the successor to the resigned Nicky Butt . In the first home game of the new round he scored a "double" against Aston Villa (6-0) and at the end of October 2010 he had his first hat trick in the Premier League against AFC Sunderland (5-1) . Even under the new coach Alan Pardew , he remained a constant as a goal scorer - including when he played against Liverpool (3-1). Somewhat surprisingly, Nolan then decided in June 2011 to move to West Ham United , who had just been relegated from the first division as bottom of the table. Part of the reason for the decision to sign a five-year contract was that he was able to work one more time with Sam Allardyce , who had been his long-time coach and supporter in Bolton.

West Ham United

Nolan became part of a five-man field, which was occupied next to him with Scott Parker , Mark Noble , Freddie Sears and Matthew Taylor and in this regard was considered a leader in the English second division. At the end of the 2011/12 season . West Ham took third place, which entitled to participate in the play-offs for direct promotion to the Premier League. As captain of the team, Nolan contributed a total of thirteen goals this season, including one goal in the 3-0 semi-final against Cardiff City . Nolan also played a major role in the club's subsequent comfortable relegation and his ten league goals - including another hat-trick against Reading FC in May 2013 - meant for him that he was able to achieve double-digit goals in championship games for four years in a row.

The first half of the 2013/14 season was initially slow for West Ham and Nolan was not spared from criticism. This referred to his style of play, often described as inconspicuous, as an attacking midfielder when he failed to score, and to two red cards within a month. Coach Allardyce briefly referred to demoting Nolan as captain, but then left it on with a £ 100,000 fine. A shoulder injury after the first day of the 2014/15 season initiated Nolan's slow end to the "Hammers". Although he returned to the team after just over a month, ten of his missions this year were only by substitution. His one-goal goal yield was also poor and on August 22, 2015, he made his last appearance for West Ham at home against AFC Bournemouth (3-4). Five days later, Nolan left the club after the new coach Slaven Bilić had not guaranteed him to come regularly to the train.

National team

Internationally, Kevin Nolan has been nominated twice for the English U-21 selection . Due to his parentage, the midfielder could also have played for Ireland or the Netherlands .

Coaching activities

At the end of January 2016, Nolan took over the position of player- coach at the fourth division Leyton Orient . He was on the pitch fourteen times in the remaining league games of the 2015/16 season. Overall, the club won seven out of 15 games under his direction, but Nolan's coaching engagement ended in April 2016 after only one point had been collected from four games. In July, the end of his playing time at this club followed. In January 2017, Nolan became player-coach at the relegation-threatened fourth division club Notts County and led the club to a midfield position until the end of the season. In the following 2017/18 season , Notts County was on a direct promotion place for a long time, but in particular a weak away record from the turn of the year caused it to slip to a play-off place, in which they were defeated in the semifinals Coventry City . After a bad start to the 2018/19 season with only one point from five games and being in last place in the table, Nolan was dismissed on August 26, 2018.
