At the beginning of the 2009/10 season, Sears moved on loan to the team from Crystal Palace in the Football League Championship , the second highest English league. After 19 goalless appearances for the Eagles , one of them in the League Cup , Sears returned to West Ham United in late December 2009. Sears was loaned for the fourth time in the second half of the 2011/12 season when he played for Colchester United in Football League One from January to May 2012 . In the summer of that year, his contract with West Ham ended and he signed a new three-year deal with Colchester United.
