EFL Championship 2019/20

The EFL League One 2019/20 was the 16th season of the English EFL League One as the third highest English division after the Premier League and the EFL Championship . At the same time it is the 28th season of the second highest division of the English Football League after the introduction of the Premier League in 1992. The two top-ranked clubs go straight to the EFL Championship, the clubs in third to sixth place play in play-off mode for the third promotion place.

It started on August 3, 2019 and was originally supposed to end with the final of the promotion play-offs in May 2020. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic , the EFL interrupted all three leagues on March 13, 2020 until April 3, 2020, on which day the season was ultimately canceled. At this point in time, the clubs had played 34 and 35 league games, respectively. On May 15, 2020, the clubs voted that the table status would be determined using a point quotient. The play-off games were not canceled and were held in early July 2020.

As early as August 27, 2019, the newly promoted FC Bury was excluded from the game due to financial difficulties, which reduced the number of participants to 23 teams. Therefore, only the teams in the last three places are relegated.

Teams

A total of 24 teams started playing in the English third division, including 17 from the 2018/19 season . As a climber from the EFL League Two 2018/19 came Lincoln City , Milton Keynes Dons , the Tranmere Rovers and FC Bury it. The three relegated teams from the 2018/19 EFL Championship completed the field of participants: Rotherham United , Bolton Wanderers and Ipswich Town . No longer represented are Luton Town , FC Barnsley and Charlton Athletic as relegated to the EFL Championship 2019/20 and Plymouth Argyle , FC Walsall , Scunthorpe United and Bradford City as relegated to the EFL League Two 2019/20 .

Before the start of the season, two clubs fought financially. The second division relegated Bolton Wanderers filed for bankruptcy on May 13th. The continued existence of the club was guaranteed on August 29, 2019 by raising the necessary financial resources, with which the club was able to keep the game going. The newly promoted FC Bury did not succeed. After filing for bankruptcy, the financially troubled club was excluded from gaming by the EFL on August 27, 2019. The first five game days Bury could not field a team.
