The Milton Keynes Concrete Cows

The MK Stadium (or stadium: mk ) is a football stadium in Bletchley, part of the English city of Milton Keynes , United Kingdom . It is also known as the Denbigh Stadium . It is the successor to the National Hockey Stadium , which was the home of the Milton Keynes Dons from 2003 to 2007 (until 2004 Wimbledon FC ).

history

The groundbreaking ceremony for the new venue took place on February 17, 2005 south of the city center. The official opening was carried out on November 29, 2007 by Queen Elizabeth II . The first game took place on July 18th of that year. The Milton Keynes Dons defeated Chelsea XI 4-3 .

When it was completed, the MK Stadium offered 22,000 covered seats on the four grandstands. The seats were only distributed on the lower part of the two-story grandstands. The North Stand behind the gate is home to the visiting fans. The South Stand of the home fans on the other side is called The Cowshed ( German  Der Kuhstall ). This goes back to the painted concrete cows that stand in the city. The Arena: MK sports hall with 4,500 seats is connected to the rear of the south tier . Work on it had to be suspended due to the financial crisis . The main grandstand in the west houses u. a. the VIP boxes, business seats and dining facilities. The club name MK DONS was created with white plastic seats on the east strand .

The playing field is made up of a natural turf with woven artificial turf fibers . In September 2006, around 20 million synthetic fibers were inserted 20 cm deep into the ground. Over time, the lawn grows together with the synthetic fibers and is then more resistant, even with heavy use.

In October 2013, the installation of the seats on the upper tier was completed. Since then, the stadium has offered 30,500 seats.

Other use

Some games of the England U21 national football team took place in the stadium. The venue's record number of visitors was set at the first game against Bulgaria . The European Championship 2009 qualifier ended 2-0 for the English. In June 2009 England's U-21s met Azerbaijan in preparation for the European Championship ; In front of around 12,000 spectators, England clearly won 7-0.

The stadium was the focus of Milton Keynes' 40th anniversary events in 2007.
