The Kassam Stadium is a football stadium in the English city of Oxford , County of Oxfordshire . This is where the Oxford United football club plays its games. The venue belongs to a company owned by Firoz Kassam, the former owner of the club, and is also named after him. In 2001 the club moved to the newly built stadium, sealing the fate of the Manor Ground , which had to give way to a hospital. From 2012 to 2015 the rugby union club London Welsh RFC used the stadium for their home games.

history

Construction began in 1996 by the contracted company Taylor Woodrow , which has already built the Riverside Stadium for Middlesbrough FC . The construction was constantly accompanied by financial problems, which led to construction stops and delays several times and which also led to the takeover by Firoz Kassam. Several problems with Oxford City Council and other offices followed. In 2001 the new stadium could finally be put into operation. The stadium has a capacity of 12,500 spectators and consists of three grandstands. These are covered and only have seats. Smoking and alcohol are prohibited in the stands.
