The Memorial Stadium (also known by its former name Memorial Ground is known) is a rugby - and football stadium in the English city of Bristol . It is located on Filton Avenue in the Horfield district and seats 11,724. It is used for the matches of the rugby union club Bristol Rugby and the football club Bristol Rovers .

The stadium opened on September 24, 1921, and served as the sole venue for Bristol Rugby for almost 70 years. It got its name in memory of the fallen soldiers of the First World War . In 1996 the Bristol Rovers rented one. Since Bristol Rugby was relegated to the second division, the club ran into a financial bottleneck and lost control of the stadium company. The Bristol Rovers have been the sole owner of the stadium since 1998. There were plans to increase the stadium's capacity to 18,000 spectators; construction work should begin in 2007 and be completed by the beginning of the 2009/10 season.

The renovation was postponed several times due to the financial crisis. In June 2011, the Bristol Rovers announced that instead of renovating the Mem, they wanted to move to the UWE Stadium, which is planned for 2014, with 20,000 seats. Construction on the site of the University of the West of England should include a. to be financed with the sale of Memorial Stadium to the Sainsbury's supermarket chain . Sainsbury's withdrew from the project and also won the ensuing court case.

In August 2017 the Al-Qadi family took over the club. It was then decided to further develop the existing station and not to build it from scratch.
