The County Ground (through sponsorship agreement The Energy Check County Ground ) is a football stadium in the English town of Swindon , county Wiltshire . It currently seats 15,728 and is the home ground of Swindon Town .

history

The County Ground in Swindon, a town in the county of Wiltshire in south-west England , located between London and Bristol , was built in 1896. Since then, the Swindon Town football club has been using the stadium as a venue for home games. The club, which currently plays in EFL League One , the English third division, had its most successful period in the early 1990s , when it was active in the first two leagues of English professional football for a few years and even played a season in the Premier League , but there as bottom of the table directly relegated again. Swindon Town still ranks last in the Premier League all-time table .

In July 2012 the club published plans for the stadium renovation. The plans envisaged the renovation of the stadium in several phases with an expansion to 20,000 seats. Work should start in 2013. The plans have not been implemented to this day.

At the end of September 2017, the utility company Energy Checking Company Limited acquired the naming rights to the County Ground. It will be called The Energy Check County Ground in the future .

Visitor record and average attendance

The attendance record in this stadium dates from January 15, 1972, when Arsenal FC played a game in the 3rd round of the FA Cup 1971/72 and 32,000 spectators came to the stadium. The visitor record in the age of modern seating stadiums dates back to September 24, 2013, when Swindon competed in the League Cup against Chelsea in front of 14,924 fans.
