The Bloomfield Road is a football stadium in the English Blackpool , County Lancashire . It has a capacity of 17,338 spectators and is Blackpool FC's home ground . The club currently plays in the EFL League One , the third English division.
history
In 1899, Bloomfield Road was opened in Blackpool . Before that, the stadium, which at that time looked more like a sports field , as there were very few spectator stands, not to mention grandstands , was called Gamble's Field . The first game on Bloomfield Road took place in 1899 between South Shore FC, a club that would later join Blackpool FC, and Newton Heath FC, now Manchester United . After the takeover of South Shore by Blackpool FC, the stadium served Blackpool FC as its home base since 1901. This club still plays its home games on Bloomfield Road today.
A complete renovation of Bloomfield Road took place between 1999 and 2012. At the end of this renovation , the stadium will have 17,338 seats.
Bloomfield Road essentially consists of four grandstands. On the one hand, there is the Sir Stanley Matthews West stand , which is named after Sir Stanley Matthews (1915–2000), the best footballer to ever wear the Blackpool jersey. This grandstand forms the main grandstand. There is also the players tunnel where the players from both teams come to the stadium for the game. Another grandstand is the Stan Mortensen North Stand , also known as The Kop . This grandstand is named after another Blackpool legend, former striker Stan Mortensen (1921-1991). There is also the East Stand , which forms an opposite stand to Sir Stanley Matthews West Stand and is the second most seated stand in the stadium. Last but not least, there is the Jimmy Armfield South stand , named after the 43-time England international and 1966 world champion , Jimmy Armfield , who spent his entire career at Blackpool FC.
