Stanley "Stan" Harding Mortensen (born May 26, 1921 in South Shields , England ; † May 22, 1991 ibid) was an English football player and achieved primarily through his participation in the FA Cup final in 1953, the so-called " Matthews - Finale ”(named after Stanley Matthews, Mortensen's strike partner) became more famous when he achieved a record for an FA Cup final with three goals at Wembley Stadium , which is unique to this day .

Life

After the beginning of World War II , Mortensen was drafted into the Royal Air Force as a radio technician in 1939 and was seriously injured there during a parachute jump . After a successful recovery, he developed into one of the best post-war footballers in England.

During the war, the center forward had already scored numerous goals and went down in history with his commitment for the Welsh national team when they needed additional players for a duel against England in 1943 .

In 1947, Mortensen made his debut against Portugal for the English national team and contributed four goals to the 10-0 win. The following year he played in all six games, scoring seven goals, including three goals against Sweden . In qualifying for the 1950 World Cup in Brazil, he played all three games against Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland. At the World Cup tournament in Brazil, he was also used in the three games against Chile, USA and Spain in coach Walter Winterbottom's team alongside his strike partner Tom Finney . A low point in an otherwise successful career for England was his involvement in the 3-6 defeat against the world's best team from Hungary at the domestic Wembley Stadium at the time, despite his own goal.

During his career he played mostly for Blackpool FC , scoring 197 goals in 317 games. For England Mortensen completed 25 international matches, scored 23 goals and was the third-best scorer behind Vivian Woodward and Steve Bloomer at the time of his retirement in 1953 .

Between 1945 and 1950, Mortensen scored in twelve consecutive FA Cup encounters, including the final in 1948.

Mortensen was the top scorer in the First Division in 1951 with 30 goals and led his club to a 4-3 win in the 1953 FA Cup final with three goals, with Bolton Wanderers already leading 3-1 and Mortensen in the penultimate minute had balanced. In stoppage time , the decisive goal fell by Bill Perry , which meant the cup win for Blackpool FC.

Several players then managed to score two goals in an FA Cup final. Mortensen's record in this regard, however, has to date consisted, with Bryan Robson of Manchester United in the final repeat of 1983 had the chance to equalize. After two goals and a penalty whistle for Manchester, however, Arnold Mühren went to the penalty kick and thus prevented Robson's possible third goal in the game.

After Blackpool, Mortensen played for Hull City , Southport FC , Bath City and Lancaster City . After retiring from his active football career, he returned to Blackpool and coached the club between 1967 and 1969. In a financial emergency, he also helped his club by selling medals he had won during his career and making the proceeds available .

At the memorial service on the occasion of his death, the sentence “I suppose they'll call it the Matthews funeral” (in German: “I guess they'll call it the Matthews funeral”), which is based on the famous cup final of 1953 referred to that Mortensen's career was overshadowed by the same Stanley Matthews. In 2003, Mortensen was inducted into the English Hall of Fame in recognition of his achievements.
