Roger Hunt (born July 20, 1938 in Golborne ) is a retired English football player . The 1966 world champion played a total of 492 competitive games for Liverpool and is behind Ian Rush with 286 goals the player with the second-most goals in the history of the "Reds".

Athletic career

Roger Hunt joined Liverpool in 1959 and became one of the club's most successful strikers. He has scored 286 goals for Liverpool over the course of his career. Only Ian Rush surpassed him in the early 1990s - Hunt remains the record holder for 245 league goals to this day. With Liverpool FC he was English champion in 1964 and 1966 and won the cup final in 1965. In 1966 he reached the final of the European Cup Winners' Cup with his club , which he lost 2-1 to Borussia Dortmund . In the same year he won the soccer world championship in his home country with the English national team . As a strike partner of Geoff Hurst , he played all his team's games in this tournament and scored two goals in the preliminary round match against France . At the European Football Championship in 1968 he reached the semifinals. However, England surprisingly lost 1-0 to Yugoslavia . He played a total of 34 international matches from 1962 to 1969, in which he scored 18 goals.

In 1969 Roger Hunt moved to the Bolton Wanderers and ended his career there in 1972.
