Terence "Terry" Lionel Paine , MBE (born March 23, 1939 in Winchester , Hampshire , England ) is a former English football player . He holds the record for most games for Southampton FC .
Paine joined his hometown club Winchester City at the age of fifteen . After a little over a year, he completed trial training sessions at clubs such as Portsmouth FC and Arsenal FC . Arsenal FC wanted to sign 16-year-old Paine, who was also working for the British Railways at the time, and sent him the contract papers. These documents did not reach the recipient, however, and after a work colleague Paines informed then-Southampton FC coach Ted Bates about the talent's abilities, he signed an amateur contract there.
Shortly before his 18th birthday, Paine made his debut for Southampton against Brentford FC . The trained right wing striker and midfielder played for this club for 17 years and is the current record holder for Southampton FC with 713 league and 50 FA Cup games. In addition, after Mick Channon and Matt Le Tissier, he is the club's third-best goalscorer with 160 goals.
Paine was called up in 1963 in the English national team, which was in a multi-year preparation for the World Cup in their own country. Alf Ramsey then called him to the squad for the tournament. Paine played against Mexico in the group stage when England won 2-0. However, this was the only game Paine played in the tournament, as Ramsey opted for an innovative game system without the conventional winger that Paine embodied. The team then won the world championship and became known as a "wingless wonder". Paine's 19th international match against Mexico was also his last appearance for England.
After his time in Southampton, Paine moved to Hereford United , where he spent two seasons. A short coaching activity in Kuwait was followed by a job as a player coach at Cheltenham Town .
In 1984 emigrated Paine after South Africa and returned to England in 1988, where he assistant coach of John Sillett at Coventry City was. After two years he moved back to South Africa to work as a coach. He also made his name in the African television, where he met the former goalkeeper of Manchester United , Gary Bailey presented, English football in the best-known football program in the continent.
Because of his services to English football, Paine was awarded the Order of the British Empire as an MBE in 1977 .
