Peter Phillip Bonetti (born September 27, 1941 in Wandsworth , † April 12, 2020 ) was a football goalkeeper . He was active for Chelsea FC , the St. Louis Stars and the England national team .
With the English national team he was a member of the squad in 1966 world champion. For his only appearance at a World Cup, he came in 1970 in the quarter-final against Germany. He won the 1970 FA Cup with Chelsea FC from London and the European Cup Winners' Cup the following year , where Chelsea defeated Real Madrid in the final.
Life
Bonetti was born as the son of Swiss parents who immigrated from the canton of Ticino in Putney , a district that is now part of London . Chelsea signed Bonetti from Reading FC's youth team . Between 1959 and 1979 he was used in a total of 729 games, which was a record at that time. In addition, he remained clean in 21 games during one season and only had to accept a maximum of one goal in 2/3 of his games for Chelsea.
Towards the end of his career Bonetti spent a season in the North American professional league NASL , where he was in goal for the St. Louis Stars. He achieved greater prominence in his last international match when he conceded three goals to make it 2-3 final in the quarter-finals of the 1970 World Cup in Mexico as a substitute for Gordon Banks after a 2-0 lead against Germany . This game was Bonetti's only use during a soccer world championship. In his other six internationals for England he only conceded one goal.
After leaving Chelsea for good in 1979, he moved to the Isle of Mull , Scotland , to work as a postman . During his stay in Scotland, he made a brief return to football and played a number of games for Dundee United .
Bonetti held the record of most goalkeeping games at a club for a long time until it was beaten by Alan Knight , goalkeeper at Portsmouth FC , in the 1990s .
Peter Bonetti died on April 12, 2020 after a long illness.
