Ronald "Ron" Deryk George Springett (born July 22, 1935 in Fulham , London , † September 12, 2015 ) was an English football goalkeeper . He completed a total of 33 international matches for the English national team and was in goal in all matches at the 1962 World Cup in Chile .

Career

After Springett had previously played with the Queens Park Rangers in the third division, he moved to Sheffield Wednesday in March 1958 . There he played the remaining matches of the season in the First Division , but could not prevent relegation as bottom of the table.

With Springett in goal, Sheffield succeeded as champion of the Second Division of direct promotion to the English elite league, where he remained clean in 13 of 32 games. In the following years he was part of the team that was able to place itself steadily in the upper half of the table and even won the runner-up in 1961. In addition, he made his debut for the English national team on November 18, 1959 at Wembley Stadium against Northern Ireland , saved a penalty and was henceforth a regular goalkeeper. This continued at the 1962 World Cup in Chile, when England were eliminated 3-1 in the quarter-finals against Brazil .

After the World Cup, Alf Ramsey was the new England coach. Ramsey used on April 6, 1963 against Scotland for the first time Gordon Banks as a goalkeeper, who then also completed 13 of the subsequent 15 internationals due to his good performance and thus displaced Springett. Shortly after he had stood in the 1966 FA Cup final , which Sheffield lost 3-2 to Everton , he was also called up in the squad for the 1966 World Cup in his own country. There he was in a team that became world champions, but not used.

A year later, Springett returned to his former club Queens Park Rangers and was swapped with his younger brother Peter Springett , who moved to Sheffield. The Queens Park Rangers had just been promoted to the second division and in the 1967/68 season they managed to march straight through to the first division. After this success, however, came the immediate relegation to the second division as bottom of the table.

After his footballing career, Springett was active in gardening and was a pensioner until his death.

Others

  • During his entire time in Sheffield, Springett continued to live in London .
  • With a total of 33 international matches, Springett is the current record holder for the Sheffield Wednesday club.
