Sheffield Wednesday (officially: Sheffield Wednesday Football Club ), founded in 1867, is one of two major football teams in the English city of Sheffield alongside Sheffield United . The team is also called "The Owls" and plays in blue and white striped shirts. The club became champions four times (1903, 1904, 1929 and 1930) and three times cup winners (1896, 1907 and 1935) in two periods around 1900 and 1930 , and in the 1990s the club was the last and consistently first division club . Since its resurgence in 2012 , the club has participated in the second-rate EFL Championship .

The unusual and in English football unique addition to the name "Wednesday" (German: "Wednesday") comes from the founding club The Wednesday Cricket Club , which initially only competed on Wednesday evenings. Well-known former players of the club include Chris Waddle , Trevor Francis , Des Walker , Steve Nicol and Chris Woods .

history

Sheffield Wednesday was as The Wednesday Cricket Club so when cricket club founded. In order to maintain the fitness of the members in the winter months, a football department was set up a little later. After the club had already spent the first few years of its history predominantly in the English premier league, in 1903 it won the first championship in the First Division in 1902/03 . In the following 1903/04 season , the team again secured the title. In 1896 Sheffield Wednesday had won the FA Cup , which had been held since 1871, for the first time ; the final opponent Wolverhampton Wanderers was defeated 2-1. The second triumph followed in 1907 after Everton FC had been defeated 2-1 in the final .

In the 1919/20 season Sheffield Wednesday rose for the first time in 21 years from the First Division and did not return to the English House of Lords until 1926, where the third English championship was celebrated in 1928/29 . As 26 years earlier, the title was defended the following year . Well-known players of the team of coach Robert Brown during this time were u. a. Ernie Blenkinsop , Jack Brown , Jack Allen and Harry Burgess . The club celebrated another triumph in 1935 when they won the FA Cup for the third time. In the final, which has been held at Wembley since 1923 , West Bromwich Albion lost 4-2. This was followed by the title in the FA Charity Shield against the English champions FC Arsenal .

Two years later Sheffield Wednesday rose again from the second division and commuted the following 22 years between the two highest English divisions. It was not until the 1959/60 season that the club was able to re-establish itself in the First Division for eleven years. After a fifth place in the first year, the team reached the runner-up behind the Tottenham Hotspur in the Football League First Division in 1960/61 under coach Harry Catterick . The team then took part in the Messestädte-Pokal 1961/62 and after successes over Olympique Lyon and AS Roma reached the quarter-finals against FC Barcelona , which prevailed 2: 3 and 2: 0. A second participation took place in the Messestädte-Pokal in 1963/64 , where the end came in the second round against 1. FC Köln . In the following years, Wednesday also held its own in the upper third of the table, before relegation was only just achieved in 1965/66 with 17th place. Coach Alan Brown's team was more successful in the FA Cup and reached the final of the competition. In front of around 100,000 spectators at Wembley, however, Everton FC won 3-2 on May 14, 1966 . After more years in the first division, relegation in the First Division in 1969/70 could not be avoided again as in 1966. Important players in these years were u. a. Redfein Froggatt , Ron Springett and Don Megson .

The return to the first division succeeded 14 years later after the club played in the third division in the meantime. After eighth place in the first year of 1984/85 , the team reached fifth place a year later in the 1985/86 season . Due to the recurring hooligan problems in English football, which had come under increasing focus of UEFA after the Heysel disaster in 1985 , all English football teams were initially excluded from international club competitions for an indefinite period of time. The suspension, which was later limited to five years, also had a negative impact on Sheffield Wednesday, who would otherwise have participated in the 1986/87 UEFA Cup . In the following years, the path led steadily further down the table, before the club had to start again in the second division after the First Division in 1989/90 . Tied on points with table 17. Luton Town decided the goal difference, which was two goals worse, to the disadvantage of Wednesday.

The team rose directly back to the first division in the 1990/91 season: as third in the table behind Oldham Athletic and West Ham United . Sheffield Wednesday also won the League Cup title in 1990/91 . Opponents in the final at Wembley were Manchester United , trained by Alex Ferguson, who were defeated 1-0 by a goal from Irish international John Sheridan . Coach Ron Atkinson , who then took over the coaching position at Aston Villa , continued in the game u. a. on Roland Nilsson , John Harkes , Nigel Pearson and Nigel Worthington . Even under Trevor Francis, who initially acted as player-coach, the team was able to keep its good form and in the last season of the First Division 1991/92 reached third place in the table behind champions Leeds United and second Manchester United. This success meant that the Owls were eligible to play in the 1992/93 UEFA Cup and moved into the second round after two wins (8-1 and 2-1). There the German representative 1. FC Kaiserslautern turned out to be too strong. After a 1: 3 defeat at Fritz-Walter-Stadion , the 2: 2 in Hillsborough meant the early end.

The first season in the newly established Premier League 1992/93 ended the club in seventh place in the table. In the FA Cup 1992/93 he reached the final against the Arsenal FC coached by George Graham . In front of 79,347 spectators at Wembley, Ian Wright gave Arsenal the lead before David Hirst equalized for Sheffield. Since this score remained even after extra time, a replay was required to determine the winner. This took place again five days later on May 20, 1993 at Wembley and ended after goals from Ian Wright and Andy Linighan , as well as a goal by Chris Waddle 2-1 for Arsenal. On April 18, 1993, both teams had played the final of the League Cup 1992/93 . John Harke's early lead was offset by Paul Merson before Steve Morrow scored the winning goal for Arsenal in the 68th minute. The successful season ended without a title for the team from Sheffield. The election of Chris Waddle to England's Footballer of the Year 1993 can be seen as an honor for the club . After another seventh place in the Premier League in 1993/94 and 13th place a year later, relegation could only just be secured with 15th place in the 1995/96 season . The team under coach David Pleat made the 1996/97 season much better . With 7th place, a return to the European Cup after 1992 was only just missed. The path led in the next two years, however, in the lower half of the table and culminated in relegation in the Premier League in 1999/2000 . As penultimate in the table, the team was only able to leave the newly promoted Watford FC behind and thus rose again after nine years of excellence.

After three years in the now second-class First Division, he was relegated to the third division in 2003 as third from bottom. In the 2004/05 season, however, succeeded in the third division now called Football League One of promotion. In the play-off final, Sheffield under coach Paul Sturrock was fifth in the table with 4-2 against the sixth Hartlepool United . In the following years, the team of coach Brian Laws established itself in the Football League Championship before relegated to the third division in the 2009/10 season. After the dismissal of Brian Laws in mid-December 2009, the team could not hold the league even under their successor Alan Irvine and has been back in the third division since the 2010/11 season.

Milan Mandaric took over the club, which was in dire financial difficulties, the following season, he bought it for £ 1 and paid its debts. In terms of sport, the targeted promotion was missed, in February Alan Irvine was dismissed and replaced by Gary Megson . Wednesday ended the season in 15th place.

The 2011/2012 season got off to a more successful start. But although he had just won the derby 1-0 against city (and promotion) rivals Sheffield United and Wednesday was third, Gary Megson was relieved of his office at the end of February. In the battle for the first two places, which guaranteed direct promotion, he had recently lost too much ground.

On March 1, 2012, Dave Jones was introduced as the new coach. He should try to get promoted without going through the play-offs. Under Dave Jones, the team managed 10 wins and 2 draws in the last twelve games, took second place from city rivals Sheffield United shortly before the end of the season , and went straight to the second-highest division Football League Championship .

Stadion

Sheffield Wednesday plays at Hillsborough Stadium with a capacity of approximately 39,859 seats. The stadium is known for the great stadium disaster of April 15, 1989, in which 96 people were crushed on barriers to the field, as thousands of football fans rushed to the stands. Since then, according to the Taylor report, the fences in all English football stadiums have been removed and only seats have been allowed in the Premier League (English first division). The club recorded the greatest audience participation on February 17, 1934 with 72,841 visitors in the FA Cup game against Manchester City .
