Glenn David Whelan (born January 13, 1984 in Dublin ) is an Irish football player who plays in midfield. He took part in the European Championship finals for Ireland in 2012 and 2016 and was best known in English club football as a player from Sheffield Wednesday and Stoke City .

Career

Manchester City

Whelan began his professional career in 2001 with the English first division club Manchester City . In three years in Manchester, however, he came only to one competitive appearance in the first team when he came on for Paul Bosvelt in August 2003 in the European Cup match against The New Saints FC . This was followed by a two-month loan to FC Bury .

Sheffield Wednesday

In 2004 Whelan moved to Sheffield Wednesday on a free transfer . At Sheffield Whelan quickly became a top performer and regular player and thus had a large share in the fact that the club finished in a playoff place. Whelan scored five goals in 42 competitive games. In the playoff final against Hartlepool United , he scored the winning goal for his team. After promotion to the Football League Championship , Whelan took over the captaincy of the injured Lee Bull . The season was quite successful and the class was kept. In July 2006 Whelan was sorted out by coach Paul Sturrock after the transfer of Wade Small , Kenny Lunt and Yoann Folly . After Sturrock's dismissal, his situation suddenly improved under the new coach Brian Laws . As a regular player, he scored a total of seven goals and the club turned down numerous offers for him. In January 2008, however, the club agreed to a move to Stoke City .

Stoke City

Whelan signed on January 30, 2008 a contract for three and a half years with league rivals Stoke City. On February 2, he played his first game for the new club against Cardiff City when he came on for Mamady Sidibe in the 82nd minute . In the following game against Wolverhampton Wanderers he was in the starting line-up for the first time. On April 7th he scored his first goal against Crystal Palace . At the end of the season, Stoke City finished the season in second place and thus rose to the Premier League . Whelan was in the starting line-up for the season opener against Bolton Wanderers . Due to poor performance, however, he was rarely used and only played in the League Cup from the start. Despite being a reservist, he was regularly called up for the national team. In the second half of the season, however, he was able to improve his performance and became a regular player again and played a part in ensuring that Stoke was able to keep the class. On September 15, 2009 Whelan extended his contract early and signed a new four-year contract. In the 2-0 win over Everton FC on January 1, 2011, he played his 100th competitive game for Stoke. In the 2010/11 season, Whelan was with Stoke City for the first time in the FA Cup final , which was lost, however, 0-1 to Manchester City. His 100th league game for Stoke followed on May 8, 2011.

Aston Villa

For the 2017/18 season Whelan moved to Aston Villa in the EFL Championship . In the following two years he played 73 competitive games for the new club and helped it to promotion to the Premier League after the end of the 2018/19 season. Nevertheless, in June 2019 he was one of eight Aston Villa players (initially) who were not offered a new contract after the end of their contract.

Heart of Midlothian

He found a new club in August 2019 with the Scottish first division club Heart of Midlothian . The contract was terminated in January 2020. He then signed a contract with the English third division club Fleetwood Town until the end of the season .

National team

With the Irish U-20 Whelan took part in the 2003 Junior World Cup . In the U-21 national team , he played a total of fourteen international matches, in which he temporarily led the team as captain. For the B selection of the national team Whelan made his debut on November 20, 2007 against Scotland . In May 2008 Whelan made his debut for the senior national team against Serbia . He scored his first goal for his home country against Georgia .

At the European Football Championship in France in 2016 , he was included in Ireland's squad and was on the starting line-up in the first two games. After the 3-0 defeat against Belgium, he dropped out of the team and was no longer used until he was eliminated in the round of 16.
