James Alan Irvine (born July 12, 1958 in Glasgow ) is a former Scottish football player and current coach .

Career

As a player

Alan Irvine began his career at Queen's Park FC in his hometown of Glasgow . In 1981 he moved to Everton in the Premier League and played there for three years before going to league rivals Crystal Palace . In 1987 he moved back to Scotland for Dundee United . His last stop was the Blackburn Rovers from 1989 to 1992.

As a trainer

In July 2007 Irvine was assistant coach at Everton FC , for whom he had played from 1981 to 1984 himself. In November of the same year, however, he left the club and became the head coach of Preston North End . After two years, he took over Sheffield Wednesday in January 2010 . After his release in February 2011, he returned to Everton and became a youth coach.

From July to December 2014 he was the coach of the Premier League club West Bromwich Albion . From March to June 2017, he headed ten games for Norwich City in the Football League Championship as interim coach .
